Does anyone have any suggestions for teaching cursive? My daughter is finishing 2nd grade and almost 8yrs old due to a late birthday. She wants to learn cursive so I want to help her learn this summer but have no idea on how to teach it or where to start. I think I may have a workbook on it but not sure if I still have it or not. Any particular curriculum you used and loved or hated? Why?
We used A Reason for Handwritting. We did their Transition book and it worked very well for dd. Her cursive is very nice.
Rylee loves these videos and the dry erase board: http://www.ket.org/itvvideos/offering/reading/cursive.htm
Handwriting w/o Tears is very popular, BUT I just can't stand the boxy style of the letters. It's like print connected together. I like the traditional/loopy style, and you can get that from Abeka (my first choice) or Pentime (my second choice).
I used www.handwritingforkids.com for my older two. And A Reason for Handwriting for my youngest. I like the website because it has animations on how to form the letters, and you can print worksheets. http://www.handwritingforkids.com/handwrite/cursive/animation/lowercase.htm A Reason for Handwriting has been working for my youngest, but I still end up using the animations to show her proper formation.
Thanks everyone. I am looking through these as well as I did pick up a basic workbook at the store today.
I guess I'm just weird, but I just did it on my own. I would write out each letter, then guide their hand a few times, then just let them do it. I used a few printables from abcteach, but mostly we just do it ourselves on a whiteboard.
We did a little on the white board too after it dawned on me how easy it was to write my shopping list on my whiteboard!
We also use A Reason For Handwriting and my daughter has beautiful cursive. It practices writing with scripture.
If you saw my handwriting you would know why I don't do it this way. I want people to actually be able to read her handwriting which you can't mine very easily. My mom always said I missed my calling as a dr based on my handwriting. However if I had nice or even decent writing I would gladly do this. Dd tells me all the time with my printing that it's messy LOL
