My whiteboard needs to be replaced. It's been through several moves, and is just generally looking yucky. I would really like to replace it with a chalkboard in a nice frame (too much time on Pinterest!) I'd like it to look something like this, but bigger. How practical is a chalkboard?

I already have chalkboard paint from another project.

I know a friend painted their one door with chalkboard paint. They really like it!

We rent (and have no intentions of staying here), so whatever I do needs to be able to move with me. Good to know that someone likes a chalkboard!

I saw refrigerators painted with chalkboard paint, too. I loved it, but not sure I could do that!!

I can't stand chalkboards. Th messiness of it makes me crazy!! Chalkdust.... yuck! We have small, lap sized ones that we use periodically but in all honesty thy don't get used as much as I would have expected.

You could get a piece of masonite (that hardboard stuff they sometimes make tub-surrounds out of) that's white for markers, and paint the back with blackboard paint, then you could use both sides...

Agreed. Plus, white boards can be made much cheaper. A 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of tile board can be purchased for around $10 at a home improvement store. They'll even cut it for you so you can make smaller ones (or a large one and a few smalls). Pop a large frame around it (which, let's be honest, is going to be *very* pricey unless you find a garage sale steal) and you'll have your perfect board.

I intend to find the frame at a thrift store or garage sale. I'll have to think about the tile board though.

I prefer a whiteboard, but there is something nostagic about a chalkboard that I love too. Sadly my kids wrote on my last chalkboard with a marker and I had to trash it :(

I say get the tileboard from HomeDepot or Lowes then hit the molding and trim isle, pick out a pretty trim and use it as your frame (you can paint or stain it any way you want).

OK...the chalkdust will probably bother me too after the prettiness wears off! I still want a chalkboard though, and I've been trying to find something to hang in my foyer. I think I'll do the chalkboard for that area and stick with the whiteboard for school.

Now, I wonder if I can take my whiteboard apart and reframe it. The frame is in the worst condition. I'm thinking with some elbow grease, I can make the whiteboard part look decent. Hmmm....summer projects!

Have you tried whiteboard cleaner? If it's a plastic frame, it can even clean that.

One thing I will never do again is to paint an old blackboard with whiteboard paint! I did that to an old board in my Sunday School room. It was really an inferior white board, I think more because of the surface of the blackboard to begin with.

I'm a whiteboard person. DD and I don't like the way if feels to write with chalk! Makes my teeth sweat! I think they clean up much easier than a chalkboard.

I've never heard of whiteboard paint! If I had an old blackboard that needed refurbishing, I'd use blackboard paint... Or, actually, I might try any cheap flat-finish black spray paint-- I've made blackboards with this before: several very light coats, thoroughly dry inbetween, actually on the back of a piece of that wallboard I was talking about.... worked very well. I might try dark green, medium-dark brown, or a darkish royal blue, just for variety. When the last coat is very thoroughly dry, coat it all over with chalkdust, then erase and it's ready to use!
