We just received the list of some of the field trips that are being offered through our group. L.A County Fair "Hop, Skip, and Jump through the Variety Arts" put on by the college Aircraft Museum and Maritime Museum of San Diego Crime Lab Tour Outback Steak House "Shadowlands" ..the story of C.S. Lewis, put on by Lifehouse Theater Windmill Tour These are all done together with the group. Does anybody have any ideas for field trips that can be done apart from their groups. We have gone to different places but after so many years of homeschooling, we are out of ideas. Thanks
Hospital grocery store candy or some other kind of factory airport (LAX or a smaller one) zoo (duhhh!) local symphony orchestra firehouse a couple of years ago we went on September 11th and took them cookies and a card that thanked them for the sacrifices they made to protect us. They showed us around, gave the kids a ride on the huge firetruck--just around the station a few times, etc. They loved that we came! Just some ideas...
some of our faveriote places include the planitarium the park (try to visit one a week untill you hit all of them in your area) the zoo is fantastic the train yard the airport (at the end of the runway, luke likes to identify which type of plane it is from its bottom view... and its really cool!) catch an early movie and make arangments ahead of time to get the kids a tour of the reel room! find a high school or collage drama department and ask if they need help making sets and costumes for an upcomming play. the fire department, police and ambulance service are usually more than willing to give tours...sometimes they ask that you get a group of 8-10 together,,,but who doesnt want to see a fire truck, right? get a couple hs familys together or neghiborhood kids the water treatment plant is pretty cool too! farms hummane society (they always need help with somthing!) thats all that pops in my head right now but there are tons of things to do. my list is geared toward younger kids but any of that can be modified connie
Great ideas! Thanks. I am hoping that when we do move to Colorado that there will be numerous of places to go. Here we have been to many ballets, to the college, musicals, Fish Farm(stinky but fun), hiking, Handsome's work, zoo, Calico Ghost Town, but we seem to be very short on businesses that are willing to take us in for a tour. The Fire Dept. was scheduled to give a tour but they had to cancel do to a shortage of men. I have never tried again. I should, thanks again.
You could even take a field trip a step further (such as the cookies to the firefighters) and turn it into a community service project/field trip. I have a sis who after 9/11 made "memory" bracelets and gave them out on the base. At the time they were stationed in DC. She also makes various size small quilits which can be donated to various shelters or even the EMS. Just an idea!!
Jennifer, that is a great idea. Our church is affiliated with a shop named Martha's Cove. They help the homeless and people in shelters and the poor in general. They are always in need. This would be a great thing to do. Thanks.
Here's what my HS group has coming up for field trips, some of them could be done individually too. Zoo Police Station Archaeology Museum of El Paso Wyler Aerial Tramway Pecan Farm Insights Science Museum of El Paso Library Chef/Restaurant Kitchen Cheese Factory Florist Greenhouse Orchestra Post Office Pound/Pet Store American Theater Arts For Youth (www.atafy.org) performances
Syele, those are great places. Thanks for sharing. I really enjoy the field trips, especially when they are younger. It really makes things so special for the children. Out of everything I ever did in elementary school, field trips stand out more than anything.
That would be great to go to a pick your own fruit place! If someone knows how to can, then they could help the kids go from picking and through the canning process, then they eat the fruits of their labors. Or they could make jam or a pie. Our pastor took my kids to an area near where he lived that had big beautiful berries. They picked the berries, took them to his home, cleaned them and made a berry pie. My kids helped with the whole process. It was a GREAT learning experience!
I never thought of that. I should invite the homeschooling group to come and pick fruit from the orchard too. They would love it. When we move, this is one thing I am going to greatly miss. Even though we plan on planting fruit in Colorado, we will have to wait for a few years for the trees to mature. There is a house we are looking at that sits on 65 acres. It would be exciting to turn it into something the children can come and visit, public schools too if they wanted. You all have my wheels turning now. Great ideas, Ladies.
Some more are Pizza ( some pizza place let the kids make there own pizza it's alot of fun.) donut place swimming place grocery stores firehouse
We go to a pick your own pumpkin patch and have a little party for all of the homeschool kids we know. We learn about pumpkins before we go, then the girls can view the patch through "educated" eyes The pumpkin flowers mean so much more to them after reading a book or two Nature centers Creeks Prairies Ponds Re-enactments (around here, Pioneer) Botanical gardens Art museums (just an hour or two for younger crowd) MUSIC STORES! (If they aren't busy they'll play for you) Art supply stores Quilt shops (sometimes they have demos going) Wooded trails (we have a falls somewhat near) Caverns
We don't have many reenactments cuz nothing is all that old around here. There are a couple of American Indian Museums that are pretty cool though, come to think of it. We also have the Space Needle. There are science museums and city aquariums that are cool! Many cities have some kind of history museum or something about the history of that city also.
I started to laugh when I read this. The only ponds and creeks around here are the ones we make in our backyard with the water hose. There are a couple lakes that are a ways off but they were severely damaged in the fires this year and last. It is almost comical; when we get rain, which is very rare, the whole neighborhood is standing out front enjoying the few droplets that come down. The way they act, you would think it was El Nino.
hospitals. Especially children hospitals. you can visit leukemia patients and give them your gifts. just an idea that i've been thinking about for a while
Great idea! By the way, what are you doing up at this hour? lol I am usually in bed by now but I figured since this is a long weekend I am going to enjoy it.
Okay, LOL, edit mine to say "natural habitats", whatever they are in the barren land in which you Westerners live I knew I liked the midwest for more than a few reasons! LOL. How about, desert wildlife beach/ shoreline wildlife native wildflower walk Is that better, LOL
That's better, Jacci!   A native wildflower walk would be an interesting thing to do. Thanks so much! Patty
