I just wanted to see what you guys think of ds schedule for 8th grade. He is very right brained (day dreamer, wants the big picture 1st, creative) and ranges from visual to auditory learning. History and science are his best and also his favorite subjects. He writes about average. He lacks in planning but creatively he is strong. He hates the mechanics of writing. Reading comprehension is strong but needs more help synthesizing information. In math he understands higher concepts but doesn't pay attention to details. These are the cores I'm looking at.

Reading - Combination of Big Reads Study Guides and Thinking Through the Test Workbook

Writing - IEW probably U.S. History Theme based and/or Life Science.

Math - Either SOS Algebra or Math TV Algebra supplementing with Khan Academy

History - Lifepac 7th Grade and SOS 8th Grade (partially completed with Civics)

Civics - http://www.montereyinstitute.org/courses/American Government/nroc prototype files/coursestartc.html (Not sure on this)

    Science - Apologia General Science

Does anyone see a disaster waiting to happen?

    Thanks
    Debbie

I have a ds like yours, but he is younger (going into 4th grade) and I haven't used any of those resources. Art of Problem Solving math is supposed to be a good choice for big picture learners since they learn by figuring out the problem before they are instructed how to do the problem.

    Looks good though :)

The only thing I would question is his algebra being completed in 8th grade. Check with your state regulations. Some states will not recognize that high school course for high school if completed prior to 9th grade.

I guess the same question with civics. One of my sons took a civics class through a co-op in 7th grade, and we ended up having him do a different course in 11th grade to put on his high school transcript.

    Thanks for the look guys.

Embassy, I checked out the Art of Problem Solving. Your right that looks right up his alley. I hadn't heard of it. That is awesome. Thanks!

MT3, I think Algebra can be counted in 8th and if he had to go back to ps he would have to take an eoc test to prove he knew the material. But I'll check it out to be sure. Thanks for the heads up. Homeschooling High School is going to be tuff I think. As for civics, I plan on doing civics again in 11th or 12th grade. I just wanted to give him some exposure since here ps in 7th grade takes civics and we didn't.

    Really, thanks guys.

Comments - adore the IEW History sets....my oldest has done them the last few years and I love how it's effected her writing style! :)

Apologia General is great, too....my oldest just did it this past year. I'd look into the new companion notebook, I think I wished we'd had that for her. Using the Physical Science one iwth my 7th grader this year....our coop is teaching it, but i think the notebook will be so helpful! :)

Anyway....looks good to me....off to check out the Civics! :)
