I am new to this site, though a long time homeschooling mom. My son has just one year to go before graduating. I have looked at a few threads, and I'm feeling a little uncertain about being here. We mostly unschooled, and it seems that we might be the only ones. Are there any relaxed or unschooling families here?
Hi! We aren't really unschoolers, but we are very relaxed. The only subjects I teach are language/phonics and math. Everything else we pretty much unschool. My oldest is 6.
We are relaxed. I dream of being an unschooler, my kids on the other hand would do nothing but play video games if left to their own devices. Well, my girl might work ok as an unschooler, she is all about crafty things, and likes to learn about something then turn it into a pile of cut up paper on my floor. The boys are all about the Lego video games and Minecraft. I also live in a highly regulated state and worry about proving to the district that we aren't totally turning our brains to mush lol
My boys work much better with a routine and structure, so we try to stick to a 9-2 school schedule at least 4 days per week.
We are not unschoolers, but I am fascinated by ones who do! If my ADD wasn't so bad, we sure would! But, we are VERY relaxed...we get stuff done each day...or not! And there is no real time that is allotted to school work, just when we aren't doing anything else, I'm like hey let's go do school...still she was able to finish her curriculum early for the year! lol
My boys are young, and we unschool. We're super relaxed around here, and take random opportunities to learn, but it happens EVERYWHERE! LOL My oldest works well that way, but eventually my middle boy will have a small regiment bc that is what he is comfy with. However, for now, we just do our thing!
Good to know I'm not the only one! We live in Pa, and have managed to get a portfolio and evaluation every year, so it is possible to meet regulations without a formal curriculum. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone here! See you guys on other threads, I hope!
I would love to hear more about how you put your portfolios together and made sure you covered what the law says we need to. What part of PA are you in?
