or your favorite places to find lists of books on a given level? Rylee is reading probably about a 2nd grade level or low 3rd. Reagan is reading somewhere between a 1st and 2nd grade level. What are some of your kids favorite books around these levels? Neither really like to read. They both would probably prefer more short books than fewer long books, they also would probably prefer pictures.
I think I found this website from someone else sharing it on here. I really love Book Adventures. http://www.bookadventure.com/home.aspx Click on "Find a Book" and you can do a search based on grade level/difficulty/interest/fiction/nonfiction. Then when they're done with a certain book, you can look up the title and it will give you quiz questions for it. (A couple times I've gone on to take quizzes on classical literature just for fun )

I'm going to suggest the Magic tree house books too. Also Guardians of Ga'hool, Deltora Quest, Dragons and Shadowland
My DD liked Beatrix Potter really well-We read the full stories. She likes Mc Closkey's stuff-like the Ducklings book. She likes Curious George books. (we got them at khols). She likes the Ralph Mouse books. We will probably be buying more Beverly Clearly as well.
We have ALL the Magic Tree House, they don't seem to care for them.. crazy kids, I think they are great! Keep the suggestions coming
A to Z Mysteries were the first chapter books my reluctant reader was willing to read. The author also has a calendar series that is geared a little younger and easier, I don't remember what reading levels either are exactly, but my boys liked those.
My daughter is not a "reader" either. But she will read any DK book on all subjects. She especially likes the Star Wars ones LOL I think she likes the DK reader books so much cause they have a lot of pictures. She just can't get into the chapter books. She is 8 (almost 9) / 4th grade (this year) and is on Level 4 DK. That might be inline with your 8 year old. But the younger one might like the Level 3 ones better. A-Z might work, do they have to be read in order? I think I have the M book on the shelf, but no other. I know like Magic Tree House make more sense if they go in order. Does anyone know anything about the Animal Ark books? I got a bunch of them at a yard sale not long ago, but think they may be too high of a level.
Horrible Harry - Suzy Morris - even my younger daughter enjoys those A to Z - I don't think they HAVE to be read in order....but my son says they make more sense that way. Magic School Bus Science Chapter Books - there are 20 of them and my kids loved them Geronimo Stilton Animal Ark - my oldest read a bunch years ago, she liked them.... Ummmm....my other favorite place to find lists is Sonlight. I've found a lot of good books through there.
I went through our shelves last night and grabbed a stack of books that, according to accelerated reader, are in the 2nd grade level for Rylee to choose from. I hate our library, but will see if they have any of the A-Z Mysteries so we can begin by trying out letter A.
1st grade level - Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, A Big Ball of String, A Fly Went By, Little Bear, One Fish Two Fish, Put Me in the Zoo 2nd grade level - Frog and Toad series, Amelia Bedelia series 3rd grade level - The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark series, The Magic Finger by Dahl (probably not suitable if your family hunts though) There are pictures in all of them
Lulu and the Brontosaurus is the PERFECT starter chapter book. Most of the early readers are sooo boring and stale, this one is really funny and cute. Picture books: Where Giants Hide, The Three Grumpies, Trust Me Mom, Doodle Day, Busy Night...there is more... type in Ross Collins in your library site or Amazon, he is either the illustrator or at times the author of these picture books, they are the BEST!
My kids really liked the Junie B. Jones series, the Black Lagoon series, the Magic School Bus series, and also Dr. Seuss.
My boys say that the A to Z books sometimes talk about people you met in earlier books, but it wouldn't be too bad to read them out of order. They also helped me think of some of the other books sets they have read. Cam Jansen has lots of adventures and no need to read in any order. Jigsaw Jones was a favorite for a little while here.
Hmmmm I think there may be one or two Cam Jansen on the shelf, I may have just picked up a Jigsaw Jones as well. I just bought a big tote of books at a yardsale (like I need more books..lol) that was full of kind of early chapter books (the Animal Ark and the one A-Z Mystery I mentioned were in it).

My oldest liked Mr. Putter and Tabby stories when he was struggling. I like Henry and Mudge, but for some reason the boys never really got into those. My older boy is reading at almost grade level now (according to the teacher he had last year), but he still doesn't really enjoy reading and would rather read a picture book than a chapter book. My youngest reads well above grade level, actually he can read anything he picks up, but he prefers non fiction most of the time. He has read some of the animal ark books. They are definitely harder than many of the books we have mentioned here, but good books especially if you have an animal lover.
Not a book, but my reluctant reader has fun reading the free Lego Club magazine. That is if they are into Legos. It is fun when it arrives in the mail and then there are short comics, little snippets of stories, and descriptions for new products. Yes, it is a big advertisement, but he will sit with me and read it.
