Can you effectively teach kindergarten and maybe even grade 1 with the big workbooks that you get from like Sams Club/Costco or Walmart or some place like that? I have seen so many of the all in one work books and also workbooks just for math or reading. They are only like $7-$10 each. I will get my daughter what ever books she needs, but if I can do it for $10 and those are effective, I'm all game for saving money.

absolutely. we did this. we just yanked out a couple of pages and did them. At this age, it is only necessary to get them counting, very basic reading, and writing letters.

Those are fine to use! They don't need a lot of formal education at that age.

If you need anything like "curriculum" for kindergarten, those "Big" books would cover it. That, and read/read/read and talk/talk/talk, and maybe an edu-taining video now and again... Oh, and then there's www.starfall.com

Those big workbooks are great for kindergarten. Thats what I used way back when. I also supplemented with educational videos, reading tons of books, Jump Start software, Nintendo educational video games, and magnetic letters on the fridge.

I would go with the ones at Costco. Also one of our toy stores-Imagine that Toys, had good quality ones.

IF that was the only kind I was going to use for a grade, I would NOT get the kind at like dollar tree and what not they vary much more-IE a lot of pages will be waaaay above a grade level, or waaaay below. Where the kind at Sam's/Costco and Imagine that Toys, while they vary a little, the whole book is basically on the correct grade level.

Also as the others said lots of reading, playing, talking, singing, etc.

don't forget art, and what not.

We also used those dotted line between the two lines, pads for a lot of letter practice. Worked great!

Go on nature hikes, plant seeds, pick flowers, pick up leaves and pinecones, and such as that for science.

Lots of dough-play/cookie for kneeding and building up those fine motor skills that it takes for good penmanship.

I totally think so. I'm not using a giant one at the moment but I bought a k-1 Math workbook for my kindy son to use for math and I found a getting ready to read workbook for 1.00 at Target that I bought for him and he's working through that too. He LOVES doing his workbooks so it's great for him. If he didn't enjoy that format we would do something else. I also agree with adding in edu-taining videos and starfall.com, and reading to/with them. My primary goal in Kindergarten is to work on learning to read.

    Yes.

    Absolutely.

My oldest's Kindergarten was the old Brighter Vision Workbooks that they mailed you once a month - had a game, a book, a tape (yes, she's 13, it was still a tape!), a workbook and usually a craft. I'd stretch that with www.starfall.com and reading books from the library.

Have fun. Enjoy this age. It goes all too fast. :( I have a high schooler this year. Eeeeeeeek!
