Red Salamander!!! They found him in the barn at his mom's house.. which is has a stream and swamp area nearby. He is way cool looking, I have never seen such one before.

Rylee gets nuts over him, she is my critter kid, so I start looking at how to build him a habitat and hubby says "well I sent so and so a message, his boy was looking for a salamander for a project". grrrrrr, over my dead body is he giving this critter away...lol

He is super cool looking, red body with black spots and to look at him he looks like Randal on Monster's Inc. in shape...lol

That is all.. had to share, I sometimes think only a homeschooler can get this excited over a critter find..lol

Oh, wow...that is so cool. When you said red I didn't think of it being a bright red like that pic. You should let the DNR know you found one. On the other hand...would they then want it?? I don't know. When I was reading this the first thing I thought of was Rylee going crazy over it. You'll have to tell your husband that other kid can't have it because your kids now have a salamandar project.

We are gonna get a pic tomorrow and submit it. We have to tell them where it was found so I will tell them a general area... there are a few thousand acres of state game land here that we border, but his creek and swamp land are on clearly posted private land so they might get shot should they show up looking for more.

that is so cool, I wish we could find something like that.
Just be careful about making sure that everyone washes their hands well after handling them because they can carry salmonella (SP?) We knew someone who got really sick from playing with a turtle they found at the lake.

any kind of amphibian or water/land animal seems to be more likely to carry it.
but as long as they don't put their hands in their mouths while touching it and wash their hands as soon as they are done they should be fine.

Oh yeah.. the handwashing is something we are all into. We have a red eared slider turtle who is one of my favorite critters of all time.

Guess we have to hit yard sales tomorrow looking for a tank for him, we use to have an extra but had to separate our hamsters when we got them (they fought too much :( ) For tonight, he has happily buried himself in some nice moist soil in a butter bowl ;)

He is really beautiful! If he wasn't I probably wouldn't want him to stay around. I can't wait to get some pictures of him today.

That is SUPER COOL!!!! We have a family of geckos living behind our Davis Family sign on our front porch.. Been there for YEARS.. We like to sit out there in the summer and watch them stalk the bugs they are going to eat.. They are lighting fast too. I didn't realize that they made noise but they do.. a clicking sorta sound.. very interresting. Not nearly as cool as your find though..

Took the kids to the flea markets this morning to find a tank, came home with 2... just in case we find another critter we just have to keep ;)

Then the littles and I roamed the yard and woods for the perfect rotting tree pieces and lots of crickets and pill bugs for him to eat.

    Talk about dedication..lol

We don't have many lizards natural to our area.. about 10 years ago, hubby and I found some Eastern Fence Lizards in the woods, we brought 2 of them home and kept them a while. We have never seen another one out there, we returned those 2 right where we got them, hoping they would always be there :(

Tomorrow the littles will need to name their salamander and we will have to get a picture of him... we were on the run almost all day today!

Cool! We have a pet tiger salamander that my youngest, critter crazy, boy caught almost three years ago. His name is Spot, really creative aren't we? We also have a Northern leopard frog, named Hoppy, that he caught 2 years ago. He caught a western fence lizard last summer, but it only lived a couple months.
