What are your favorite resources for ocean life? I asked the kids to pick something they want to learn about this year for science. Reagan picked dinosaurs.. I have that one covered. Rylee asked for ocean life, I know I have books on some sea creatures... sharks, dolphins, manatees, etc... I'm looking for videos, crafts, favorite books, etc. ETA... I need secular resources

Go to YouTube and do a search for "Barefoot Books". There are about 18-ish on there. Some are silly, but some are very educational. If you can find the books at the library, many of them will have extra pages at the end with educational notes about the book. Animal Boogie - teaches how the animals of the Indian jungle move (includes a child in a wheelchair) Creepy Crawly Calypso - teaches bugs and the instruments of the calypso band, with a different musical instrument featured on each verse. Dragon on the Doorstep - just for fun (kids imagine finding a scary animal in each new hiding place as they run all over the house) Driving my Tractor - teaches animals of the farm, seasons, colors and counting (very young) Farmer's Life for Me - teaches about farm life Farmyard Jamboree - traditional song from Chile that teaches animal sounds and counting Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush - traditional song in a multicultural way (takes you on a journey from getting up to arriving at school, with 4 children from 4 different cultures on each page demonstrating how they do the same basic steps, like breakfast) Hole in the Bottom of the Sea - the one you just saw above If You're Happy and You Know It! - traditional, except that it's multicultural... each verse features a different culture in the illustrations, and the last verse teaches you to say hello in 36 languages Journey Home From Grandpa's - colors & transportation (young) Knick Knack Paddy Whack - traditional, with a different musical instrument on each verse Magic Train Ride - this one is a love it or leave it sort of song ... it's kinda funky as the train makes stops in several imaginary places, with the last one coming from your own imagination Over in the Meadow - animals of the meadow and how they sound Parrot Tico Tango - (this one isn't available in video form... only in audio) My favorite... teaches animals of the rain forest, fruits, colors, counting, and an important message about friendship, forgiveness, and not stealing from your friends Port Side Pirates! - very fun song about what it might be like to be a pirate (lots of great notes at the end of the book for this one... and national talk like a pirate day is coming up in a few weeks) Shape Song Swing-along - the one by Steve Songs on PBS ... very early learning (features a child with leg braces) Up, Up, Up! - imagining how the world might look from a hot air balloon Walking Through the Jungle - features a different animal & habitat on each verse We All Go Traveling By - transportation Whole World - traditional ("He's got the whole world in his hands), but with a conservationist twist (WE'VE got the whole world in our hands...)
Can you visit an aquarium? We did one in Newport, Ky (right across the river from Cincinnati). It was AWESOME!!! I'll check to see if I can find any of the (more secular) materials we used when I taught the ocean to a group of boys!
There is one in Baltimore, we have been there but it's been years (and it's 4 hours away), and I'm sure there is one in Jersey but I'm not sure where... that would also be 4 hours away.
Do you have Netflix? If you go to documentaries and then go to science and nature documentaries, I'm pretty sure you'll find a good selection of movies: sharks, whales, turtle, oceans, etc.
I put together a study on the ocean for my son about 4 years ago. I used a ton of Youtube videos. I chose them based on the books which we loved. I posted them all here (book information and links to Youtube videos). I'm not sure if all the links still work though.
Yes Camden is probably it, I was told it was by the Philly Zoo??? We have only been to the zoo in DC, and that was even longer ago, I think I was pregnant with Reagan last time we were there. I love the Baltimore Aquarium. I wish I could take a family DC trip and include it. I'm trying to think of a place here that I could get you some free resources-wondering if the visitors center has anything. I knkw I used Learning Page when we did sea animals. Try education.com, too. You can download many things free.
I found a mess of videos on netflix, there are some on watchknowlearn.com, and I got 3 Hands of a Child lapbooks for her... and I think we will do the learning page things. I did not look to see what homeschoolshare might have, and may do that too, but I think we will be pretty good now. I think I have dinosaurs covered for Reagan completely now too, but am wondering if I want to buy him the HOAC lapbook on dinosaurs... he isn't really artsy like Rylee is. Now Reagan tells me he wants to learn about planes...lol I found 2 videos on netflix for kids...I call that done, well maybe a book or two and a coloring page
