I've been making my own homemade deodorant for almost a year now and it really, really works! (At first I was apprehensive, now I don't even have to worry -- I never stink! :) )

    Ingredients:
    5-6 Tbsp Coconut oil
    1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch (I use cornstarch)

Combine equal portions of baking soda & arrowroot powder. Then slowly add coconut oil and work it in with a spoon until it maintains the substance you desire. You can place it in a small container with lid and apply with fingers with each use. This recipe lasts about 3 months for two people with regular daily use.

If you experience irritation/redness when you apply it after shaving, add a little more coconut oil to the mix to reduce the % of baking soda. (But you need to have baking soda in it, because that's what kills the stink bugs. ;) )

Let us know how you like it! The first week I tried it, I had my dh and dc sniffing me (in case I really did stink, but just couldn't smell it!) What an interesting time that was!

It works great. It's better than any deodorant I can buy in the stores. I'd tried them all and they all left me a little bit smelly by lunch time. I was going around with deodorant in my purse so I could reapply. Ugh!

This stuff even works the next day. It's so crazy!

I tried a similar recipe but it was supposed to be cooked so the powder would break down. I didn't really care for it. I will have to try this recipe. Thanks for sharing!

This is cool. I think I might try to make this and have my kids use it (2 are to the point of just about needing deodorant-but we don't want them to use grownup deodorant with the aluminum in it...)

Cool! All natural deodorant... much better than all the chemicals that can possibly cause problems. Thanks!

A friend of mine, young man of about 18 or 19, had a group of inner city boys at camp who were at that "in between" stage. Of course, NONE of them brought any deoderant with them. Rather than trying to decide which really needed it and which didn't, he would line them up in front of the lean-to each morning, have them raise both arms, and went down the line spraying each one, lol! The boys LOVED it!!!

Right now, I'm fussing with Phillip about showering after soccer practice/games. "You've been running hard and sweating. YOU STINK!!! You NEED a shower!!!" "But I just took one three days agooooooooo....." Sigh....

I can't wait to try this. The only issue I have it that DH is allergic to coconut. I am hoping that he doesn't have a reaction if I am wearing it.

I need to try this... I use the secret clinical strength, but after a few hours, it gets this wierd smell, like it is reacting to my body chemistry. Plus it is sooooo expensive.

Where do you get the coconut oil?

    Thanks :)

That is what I was wondering? Also, if you had an empty roll on bottle, could you put it in there, or is it to thick?

I plan to try this eventually. I am pretty stocked up on deodorant right now, but once I'm out, I'm going to try it.

coconut oil is easily found in most grocery stores right were the 'exotic' oils are kept usually in the same place as the olive oils. Mine comes in a glass jar, but yours may be different.

You can use basically any essential oil-it doesn't have to be coconut ;)

Though coconut oil does have antibacterial properties-the main purpose of the oil is for consistency-not so much an active ingredient (this recipe sounds like the same one some friends use that put the mixture in an old deodorant container-almost solid-so you don't have to get it on your hands...), but if you are going to add oil-might as well do double duty right? I know some people that just use a powder puff and baking soda for their deodorant...others that mix in the corn starch or arrowroot powder and use a puff (corn starch will irritate some people's skin)

But many other oils also offer antibacterial effects. Google it though-many are not good to use directly on the skin the way they would be in deodorant (as in-put on in strong concentration and left there-not washed away as they would be in soaps and scrubs-which is what I have experience making....)....I'm thinking tea tree oil and peppermint would be bad under your arms LOL but thyme, lemon, lemongrass and Lavender might work...

As far as old roll-on containers go, I tried reusing one LONG ago to put thin paint in for preschoolers. While the idea was FANTASTIC, it was almost impossible to get the top off and the ball out to fill them. GOOD LUCK trying!!!

I have never tried this exact recipe, but I have been making my own deodorant for a while, and it works great. My recipe is a bit different. As with any recipe that calls for baking soda, I recommend starting with less, then adding more if you stink and if your underarms do not burn. My original recipe called for two tbs of baking soda. It was WAY to strong and burned bad once my Psoriasis flared. I reduced it to 1 tsp, and it didn't work well. Now I add 1 1/2 tsp, and tea tree oil, lavender, and/or any essential oil that is a bacteria killer. It works fantastic! I have made it and placed it in an old deodorant container. I also make it thin, and pat it on when my Psoriasis is flared, usually during summer. You can also use coconut oil, and essential oils and it works great! BUT! It is sticky. I do not like the sticky feeling so I still add a little arrowroot. Cornstarch also works, but recently I prefer arrowroot. It is smoother.

So, I will dare to say the original recipe of this post probably works. I was honestly surprised at how well homemade deodorant works. I will never go back to store bought. I also only apply it once a day. With store bought, I had to apply it a few times a day.
