If you know me you know that I sent my son to school this year. He is attending a private christian school and I assumed I would be an assistant teacher, or teach drama. They have Art this time around so another instructor got in before me. I am okay with that as I have so much to do! I am working on a new booklet instruction for young children's Home School ideas at present and the sequel to follow on Hinds Feet! (yes finally working on it!) I have the time so tomorrow I start full time writing! Now my delema- My ds is doing too little work at the school. He has SOS- US HISTORY, English 11, Art, PE, Spanish 2, And Christian Counseling ( a challenging course meant for college students that he will do fine with). He is already done with his week of school work! I had asked for Chemistry, or 11 th grade Science, and 12 grade math aka, Pre Calc. The teacher at the school cannot teach either of these as he has never had to teach them. I am frustrated because we sent him out to be taught what I can't do since he is ahead in math and sciences. So is there a program that will teach my son 11th grade science? One that he can do without the teacher stressing out? I already provided a video so the kids can see experiments for Life science that they have not done with SOS. I almost want to learn to teach it so I can help this school out but i am also frustrated with sending him out and paying good money to have him hang out and get a really good art class Lol and PE. My dh goes back and forth with pulling him from school and just doing SOS at home ( we pay for the curriculum the school is connected with AOP legally and all that) I would think that SOS Chem would work independantly but I do not know if anyone has done this course? Steve? Or any of the other mathematical, scientific minded people can you suggest something to help this teacher or myself? Thanks! :|
The Apologia Chemistry is very good. The cd rom you can get for it shows them walking through how to do the examples so that will help if you are not a math person. The labs can easily be done at home and are laid out fairly well.
When I asked the teacher he said because he would have to go take a refresher course to teach it... Lindina, you do teaching his way actually could you do either of these? I was thinking the SOS would have it all inclusive? Chem would not be difficult and I am checking dds transcript today because I know she took it! lol
If I remember correctly most of the lab supplies were stuff we already had. Homeschool Training Tools has a kit with the main stuff you need http://www.hometrainingtools.com/chemistry-science-kit/p/AM-KTCHEM/ As for books we had the student book, the solutions/test manual and the multi media companion cd.
If I was going to use Apologia, I'd have to brush up first (tried it once already and I know...). If I was going to use SOS, no, it's supposed to all be on the SOS.
The only thing I know about Monarch is that it's supposed to be just like SOS only online instead of on disc.
You know, TM, I really don't have any problem telling a high schooler, "I don't really know. Let's find out together!" which is what I would say if I were using SOS and we hit a snag that wasn't easy for them to figure out on their own.
