Hmm...the year I got my daughter a bunch of Amelia Bedelia books I also got the Frog and Toad Collection, Little Bear, and The Complete Adventures of Curious George. Maybe she'd like those?

Our library has a series my daughter has enjoyed called Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew. It's about an 8 year old Nancy Drew. Maybe that would spark her interest in mysteries which would then lead to books like Nate the Great, Cam Jansen, The Box Car Children, etc. Maybe not right away....but after she gets those easier readers down and her reading takes off (it *will* happen ;) ).

Oh, by the way, I would be glad she has no interest in Junie B. Jones yet. I got rid of all of ours when my daughter told me how sassy Junie is behind her mothers back. That's all I need is for my daughter to start picking up on that.

Might be a good time to try Charlotte's Web. Lots of sight words, easy phonics, but great story:)

My daughter liked Hank the Cowdog. I HATED Hank the Cowdog....with a purple passion. But we read Hank because she liked them...all three hundred of them. LOL.

If she's horse crazy, "Pony Scouts" is a step 2 reader series that my niece enjoys.

You can't lose with Captain Underpants. My husband LOVED reading Captain Underpants to my daughter. I think he laughed as much as she did. But it would be more of a read-to and read-with-help or follow along book right now. It was one of those books that made my daughter so anxious to learn to read, I saw her hiding with it, trying to sound things out on her own...just so she could surprise her Dad and know what was next:)

My DGS loves Hank the Cowdog! He and Pa-pa are working their way through the library shelf of maybe 20 or so... (there are really 300??) This is their bedtime read-aloud, for now. I can hear them laughing all the way down the hall. Probably the fact that DH reads it with a "cowboy twang" accent helps a lot. I think they're pretty hysterical, too. Don't know what we'll do when they've finished those!

She "hates" reading. She is getting good at it but she it my artistic child. She is all about color and pictures and words seem to be foreign to her, esp if there is no eye candy for her. We were just introduced to Gerinimo Stilton we got our first book and she is slowly warming up to it by looking at the pictures. We will start reading it next week if she doesn't begin on her own.

There are actually only 61 Hank the Cowdogs. LOL. Just felt like 300 to me! But hey, she loved them, and that's what counts!

Maybe try incorporating reading in ways other than books? I used to write my daughter little notes decorated with stickers, stuff them in envelopes and put them in a mailbox on her bedroom door. Then, she'd write back. Was a lot fun. We started to keep the letters in a scrapbook, so it would read like a story.

Ellen, Have you seen the cat? He likes to watch birds in the window. But he is not there, and I have not seen him anywhere. Can you help me find him? Mom

Mom, I saw him under my bed. We should leev food out. Ellen

Ellen, I found him! He is sleeping in the bathroom. What should we make for dinner? Mom

Mom, I like spegetee. I can help cook it. Can we feed ducks tomarow with Gramma? Ellen

It was all stupid mundane stuff...but it was fun to send each other notes in mailboxes we'd made, and it was fun to put them together in "Our" book. (and it has since become a treasure to both of us)

It was also a great way to identify spelling words she needed help with, grammar issues, etc.

I would caution you against saying anything about spelling or grammar mistakes in relation to the letters themselves....keep those fun and worry free, so she continues to enjoy them.

But use that sneaky insider knowledge to customize her next English lesson in a day or two:)

My daughter really likes the Rainbow Fairy books. There are a ton of them put out by Scholastic. They all have relatively the same plot, but she loves them and will read them by herself. She just turned 8 if that helps.
