Trish and I are starting that Oregon Trail trip in January (via computer). I was wondering if anyone has any great ideas for us on this. We have to pack our wagon and all. The site is http://www.cyberbee.com/wwho/index.html if you are interested in joining.
That looks fantastic. We are doing the Beautiful feet curr. this year but I think next year we will do that. Can you keep us posted on how well you like (or dislike) that project.
Lornabc , Boy, that looks like lots of fun think we might join you. Any ideas what we have to do? Looks like a good History Project to do. Thanks Kris TX
HI Lorna, Thanks for posting the site! I talked with my kids, and we signed up! Now do we just wait until January, or what? I couldn't find anything about packing our wagons or anything until January. I think I'll have my kids play the Oregon Trail computer game a few times to keep things in their minds. But that probably won't REALLY help in the actual game. Just an idea we might try...
I am a self-proclaimed history buff - and this is my favorite period! My kids have been playing the Oregan Trail game and they love it. We(I) also checked out all the Dear America Diaries on the Oregan Trail that I could find. There are some for older like 14(girl) and one for younger - I think the boy was 10. These are so great! We used them as our read aloud books. I hear they packed pickles or at least vinegar to ward off scurvy. Did you ladies know there was also an herbal pill (way back then!) for birth control? Definitely going to check out the website! It sounds great! Sabrina
Hi Lorna, Thank you so much for the website. We just signed up (our name is right under Deena's). I'm very surprised that we're the first participants from Oregon. It looks like lots of fun. My kids love to play the Oregon Trail CD-rom. We can't wait to start the journey . Thanks again, Urailak (blessedmom)
I signed my two little girls up right under you two. Hope to see you all on the trail. Thanks Kris TX
Great I am so glad some of you are joining.  You need to be reading up on that time. If you go in the different topics. Then up at the top of each page there are more sites to click into. About 6 to every page. It is a little confusing and I didn't catch it until about my 3rd trip into the main page. It has teachers and under that there are about 6 pages to enter. I think we have to pick who we are by reading up on them. Make wagons and oxen. Then we have to pack the wagon. Every Friday at 1 they will meet via computer and chat about what everyone is doing. They do have a page with people writing in now. You would just have to keep clicking until you find it. I will try to go back and look for it. There are pictures of the last trip too. I think it will be fun but alot of work. They will give you fates and you have to figure out what to do. Like a snake may bite you or a bear my attack. I hope my children don't die on me. That would be bad. Lorna
HOW COOL!!! Not for us this year, but maybe next. We covered all the states east of the Mississippi two years ago, and so maybe next year we'll do the other half of the country and sign up for the trail.
This is SO COOL! Thanks for posting it. I have been in the process of planning a unit study on the Oregon trail for January. This will be a great addition. My kids are already reading the Dear America books from this time period. They are both very excited about this. Thanks again! Terry
We are not participating this year, but I was wondering how your trips were going - those of you that signed up. I saw from the previous posts that several of you were signed up for the January trip. Keep us posted! Sabrina
We signed up, but then I had to cancel, cuz we just had too much going on. My kids agreed they really didn't feel like they wanted to do it now after all with all the other stuff we're doing. They are so into the Ancient History stuff that they didn't want to put that on hold. I wrote to the wagon mistress and apologized, and asked them to send us info. for the next trip. Yeah, ya'll that joined, let us know how it goes!
oregon here we come Howdy, We have made our wagons out of shoeboxes and pop sticks and started to pack them. We have also bought a wooden wagon kit to nail together. We have made oxen out of towel paper rolls and cows from toilet paper rolls and pop sticks for legs. It worked well. We have read several good books, The Palace Wagon, DailyLife in a Covered Wagon by P. Erickson and If you traveled west in a covered wagon by Ellen Levine. The last two were great. We are now working on Across the Wide and lonesome prairie a Diary of Hattie Campbell. I like it as well. I have found loads of info on the sites listed at the westward ho site. We have picked out our supplies. We are going to make a small quilt. A very simple one. I am going to let them put their name on it in stitches, and their handprint. A heart and a outline of a girl or boy depending on the sex of each child. Those patterns came from a dutch boy and girl quilt. We plan to cook Ho cakes and eggs one morning when Daddy is home to enjoy with us. I am glad some of you joined with us. Lorna
WOW Lorna, That sounds great! I bet your kids are gaining GREAT knowledge from all this that you're doing with them! You go girl!!! Has the Wagon Train on-line started yet?
