My son is only a freshman, but I want to start preparing now, for this test.

Mine took the PSAT from 9th grade - obviously that has already happened this year but it is a shorter form of the SAT. I have a page I wrote on the tools I used with my kids - http://www.squidoo.com/ACT-SAT-PSAT-Preparation but bear in mind the SAT is changing ... You can read about some of the changes here: http://www.insidehighered.com/news/...-president-gives-some-hints-about-changes-sat

So - now that I have been so unhelpful ... here is what I would do (I have an 8th grader so this actually applies to me too):

    1. Vocabulary - use good resources to work on it. It is essential to understanding and answering questions on all standardized tests

    2. Math - make sure your student is solid with all the basics.

For the rest, it is going to be anyone's guess I am afraid

Rachael used a book she got from the library. I think it had a computer disc with it. But it was a big help to her!

Having a basis of Latin/Greek roots for vocabulary can be a big help!

My kids all used Princeton Review and it was VERY helpful BUT as the SAT is changing all those old books will be of no value - which is what I was mentioning in my earlier response. Once the new SAT is out and Princeton update their books it will be helpful to use prep books.
But for now ... using the old books isn't going to help prepare for the new version on the SAT that is coming.

Test taking is test taking. I'm not sure they will change that much, though I do understand that Common Crap may be influencing real learning.
