Yes, well I think the idea of the 18+ thing that a lot of ppl have for tattoos, is that it's kind of a passage to adulthood thing, I suppose. Like, making a man feel manly, and a woman feel womanly, sort of thing, if they go to the parlor. On the one hand this might in actual fact be something of an illusion. On the other, the idea of the Feds even taking this away from them at 18 would seem kind of...harsh, doesn't it?

(Especially since many 18 - 21 year olds put themselves in harm's way in uniform to protect the rest of us.)

LOL.. I almost witnessed death by earring when my brother, at age 15, got his ear pierced. This was 30+ yrs ago, and when my dad saw his earring (that he forgot to take out before getting home) he gave him 3 seconds to take it out or get it ripped out.

Honestly, I don't think age has anything to do with a tattoo, but I do think that if you are going to get one, you should design it yourself... you do not have to be an artist to do this!... draw it up or have it drawn up (no matter how rough it looks), hang it somewhere where you will see it every day for at least 6 months... better yet, a year. If you still love it, then move into the step of finding a good artist to put it on your body. Honestly, do not be afraid to walk up to strangers and ask them where their ink was done, if it's good they are proud of it and are happy you noticed it and will talk up their artist... if it's not, they will happily tell you not to go to that loser that called himself an artist.

Oh and yes, they hurt... but it's like having a baby, the pain fades and hopefully you have an awesome piece of art that means something special to you, that will last you forever.

My next one is drawn up, waiting my year before I decide to get it done... if I can figure out the right spot to put it.

I don't think the federal government should make any more laws! Certainly not for something as trivial, in the grand scheme of things, a tattoo. I think they should read, understand, and protect the constitution and keep their noses out of the personal lives of citizens! (Just my 2 cents)

Tattoos are forever. I don't think the age should be lowered or raised. But I do love Somer's idea of 'living with it' I also like the idea of the long-term temporary tattoos, especially for your first tat. I've know since I was 16 what tattoo I wanted, though the details have changed a bit. Just haven't gotten it yet (money). I'm quite sure after 20 years of living with the idea, I will LOVE the tattoo when I do get it.

My SIL worked at a tattoo parlor as a teen (her step-dad owned it) and she got tattooed up-1/2 sleeve, top of her foot, etc, and now, since working office jobs, has to wear 3/4 sleeves shirts plus socks and shoes year round in the GA heat and humidity to keep the tats covered and look professional. As a teen, she didn't foresee that at some point in her life, something might change & she might need to keep her ink covered.

Even simple jobs like restaurants, at Applebee's you can't have any ink showing. If you have ink showing, you can't work front of house (hostess, waitress, bartender, managers). I think teens (and some adults) are very immature to think getting a neck or face or hand tattoo will be okay because of their current job and future plans. Plans change, life happens, people change. Visible tattoos can have a negative impact on your life. In this economy, a job is hard enough to find without having a tattoo keeping you from getting one....

Sounds like you're well experienced under the inking needle, and pain isn't a big issue.

18 seems to be the age for many ppl, anyway, though I realize the age thing isn't important to you (and there's no need to mention your age now! :) )

Sounds like you think the 18+ tattoo thing that applies in most states has gotten it about right. You seem like you knew already at 18 what you wanted, anyway. From what you say, maybe your SIL also did it at around 18; and it's good that you got someone in the family that's had tattoo parlor experience. It can be worthwhile work experience anyhow at that age.
