Our local roller skating place has a homeschool day once a month. I have never gone. When we first moved here and were starting to homeschool I felt the kids were too young (3 and 6). Then I kept making excuses. We had something else going on or I forgot which day it was, etc... Then they spent a couple years in school. Now we are homeschooling again and I have been trying to talk myself into this, but with the same excuses coming up each month.

I, and even the rest of the family, tend toward being introverts. We are very involved in our church and with a small group of people. But going out to hang out with and meeting new people is not in our comfort zone. We are perfectly happy spending most of our time with just our family.

Then there is the fact that the boys have only gone skating twice. One of them loved it, but was a complete klutz. The other was totally unimpressed. But both are willing to give it another try.

Well, today is the day! We are going to go skating, we are going to meet other homeschoolers. We are going to have fun, whether we like it or not ;)

    Sounds fun!!

I'm an introvert too. A few years ago I joined a group online that is sort of local that plans all kinds of sort of local events. I keep telling myself we will eventually go to one... but so far I haven't found the courage to go :(

I understand! I'm an introvert and socially awkward. It can be scary to leave our comfort zone. Is it bad to say that part of me is thankful that my husband just got a job working outside the home and since we only have one car we can't go out as often? Talk about a shy person's dream! :D

Skating sounds like a fun outing! I hope it is painless (physically, mentally, and emotionally) and you meet some really nice people. I'm sure you won't be the only ones there feeling a bit stretched.

I get it completely. I am the same way, but I pushed myself out of my comfort zone for my kids sake. I hope you have fun.

Aww, thanks guys for making me feel so normal :)

I wanted to share my thoughts this morning and after I posted I wondered what in the world I had done and almost deleted it.

We have one other homeschooling family in our church and I knew the mom worked today so I didn't expect them to come, but the dad and son came skating so that meant we actually knew someone.

Other than that I had a short conversation with one lady and exchanged smiles and "hi" with a few others. Many moms sat with a small group of people they already knew. A dad spent the whole time working on his laptop. The rest of the moms and dads, including me, skated with their kids.

My nine year old was afraid of falling and clung to me the entire time. 12 year old is so clumsy, but had a great time. Both want to go again next month and are amazed that there are that many homeschooled kids in our town.

I hadn't roller skated in many years and am going to be very sore.

Overall, I am glad we did it and we will do it again.

There use to be a rink that had a homeschool day once a month. I grew up skating, so it was a natural for us. The kids LOVED it, but unfortunately, the rink closed.

That's too bad, Jackie. I think we will come to enjoy this activity now that I have stepped out of the comfort zone once.

We have a local rink that has an open homeschool skate every Friday afternoon. We've only been a couple times, but it's cheap, and my kids love doing it. We just don't get to do it often. :)

    Glad you got "out there".

Good job for jumping out of your comfort zone. I wish our skating rink were closer so we could go more often. What I like about the skating is that I can get out there and take part in the exercise and music too. You don't have to sit on the edges and see if anyone is going to talk to you, etc. Be out there with your kids. I even participated in the skate races that they did about halfway through the time- and I didn't come in LAST!!

I feel the same way. I get panicked being alone in social situations. I have to know at least one person to feel ok.

Good for you to try something outside your comfort zone.

I just did the same thing as you. I signed up for Family Fun Night with my youngest at our charter school. YIKES!
