Does anyone have an English curriculum they could recommend for teaching my 5th/3rd grader together? Right now we are 4th/2nd and use Rod and Staff. I love the traditional feel of Rod and Staff but feel I could be teaching both of them the same stuff. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Why not do 3rd Rod and Staff?

Another you can do together fairly easily is Easy Grammar.

If you want a good writing program that you could use for both levels you might want to look at IEW. Their SWI-A is recommended for 3-5/6th grades. For spelling you could check out Spelling Power but you still might need to do it separately since they may be working at different levels. I like Easy Grammar too.

I use R&S 2 for my two and plan on switching to Easy Grammar 3 next year.

I have a 4th and 5th right now. We are using Easy Grammar 3 , spelling power, and Painless Grammar mixed together. We do "grammar and writing" two days a week. I have them write something that shows what we learned by reading painless grammar or they do a worksheet or two out of the EG3 book. The EG3 was way to much repetition or something it didn't seem to teach my kids anything other then how to answer the question correctly. They can do it, but they didn't know why. They each do spelling separately, but it only takes 10 minutes each for me to read the list to them.

Thank you for the suggestions. Doing rod and staff 3 would be a great idea but my daughter has already done it and I'd like to catch her brother up to what she is doing rather than take her down a level. Both read on about the same level so it would be nice to teach them these subjects together.

Might be kinda tough on the younger one to jump up to 5th with the older, but maybe you could take some extra practice out of the 3rd and 4th books when needed?

I use Evan Moore books. My gr 3 does the gr3 books and my gr1 does the gr 1 books. But they are working on the same concepts at the same time. We use Language Fundamentals and Language review. Right now we are just giving up on "All about Spelling", so I"m looking into their spelling books.
