Alright, I posted this on my facebook and got a GREAT response, but I thought I would widen the net a bit and see if anyone else had any input.

Patryk has a double ear infection, and Hubs took him to the after hours clinic last night (to which I wasn't happy about, but our regular doc is gone for the rest of the week), and she prescribed him an antibiotic, numbing drops, and Ciprodex. Well, antibiotics are useless bc he's been on so many and he's used to all of them, numbing drops are a waste of money if you ask me, and the Cipro is expensive, but it's the only thing that has ever worked, and is a ear drop.

Well, I remember hearing that breast milk can be a good treatment for ear infections, and breast milk is free bc I am, thankfully, making an abundance of it! lol Have any of you had any success with this or even heard of it as an affective treatment?

I dropped 3 drops in each ear this morning (he was feeling pretty crummy and holding his ears) and put a sock/bean heating pack on each ear and I rubbed sorta behind and to the bottom of his ear in a downward motion. He is now NOT holding his ears, and he is "playing" the piano rather loud. I think it's actually helping...

For what it's worth, I've friends who swear by a poultice of activated charcoal and ground flax seed for ear infections. Though, to be quite honest, it never seemed to work well for me. She makes the poultice, wraps it up in a Bounty paper towel (she swears any other isn't strong enough and it will soak through) puts it against the ear and places a hat that can be tied into place on top of it. The child then sleeps with it in place.

I have ground flax, but no charcoal :/

I also hear good things about essential oils, but I have none. They are so expensive at our local health store!!

My grandma used breast milk for ear infections. I have also heard of people using breast milk for pinkeye with great success. Raw goats milk is supposed to be good, too. I have never tried either.

I've never tried it but a lot of people I know do and swear by it.

We don't do antibiotics for ear infections cause there's not enough blood flow to where the infection is to be effective.

We keep garlic oil ear drops on hand, they are a little expensive (about 8 dollars a bottle, but will last for a loooong time-years!). And usually only a few applications and things are good again.

Having your child snuff saline can help also. Many times the bottom of the Eustasian tube is clogged or swollen causing the build up of fluid in the years. Snuffing a warm saline then letting it run done the back of the through along with gargling can help.

I put a teaspoon of salt in a couple onces of warm water then dip a cotton ball in it. I then squeeze out a couple drop into their nostril while head held to ceiling and they snuff. We getting the timing right by counting 1,2,3 go. This is done a couple of times per nostril.

The above is often followed by running nose as sinus fluids loosen up and coughing up of stuff from throat. During this quite often the tubes will open and a squirggling noise is heard as liquid trapped in ears leaves.

When mucous membranes are swollen the presence of a higher salt concentration on the outside causes them to, by osmosis, shed extra water inside the cells of those tissues to stabilize the concentration gradient.

When this does not work, in 4 years and up child, I will use a single sniff of 12 nasal spray per nostril one time each day for 2 maybe 3 days. This will clear a clogged up ear when its too tight for saline to work.

I made garlic ear drops for my dog. She was 8 years old when we got her, and we have had her for about two years. She struggled with ear infections all her life. When we first got her, my friend gave her to us with a nasty ear infection. None of the vet's antibiotics worked. Finally I made my own out of very concentrated garlic water, and rubbing alcohol. It took her infection away completely and kept it away for the whole time we had her. It wasn't until recently that she developed another infection. Due to all the years of infections, her canal collapsed and she developed a severe aureal hematoma. The infection spread throughout her body, and the bone and tissue around her face was so infected, her face looked like a football. She had surgery. So far it has been a success. But the infection isn't completely gone after a month and a half of treatment. So I made her more garlic drops and WOW!
The infection is all but gone. We will keep treating her daily until it is gone.

Point of my story? :D I swear by garlic as an antibiotic. It is AMAZING!

I think if I had a animal with that high a rate of ear infections, I would just do the garlic once a week when there is no infection just for safe measure. But, I don't know. Just thinking out loud. Poor doggy! But, this kind of thing can happen to children too!

That is exactly what we are planning on doing. :D We plan on treating her twice a week once the infection is gone. :D This surgery will be her last. We weren't even sure if we should do this one, but we decided to go ahead. With that said, she is old and while we love her, we can't afford to have another surgery done if this were to happen again. The vet said the only sure way to be sure it doesn't happen again is to make sure she stays infection free. So, we will see. :D

When Thing2 was a baby he & I got pink eye (it was awful!) and we simply used breast milk to cure it. I'd put drops of breast milk in both our eyes three times a day. Our doctor actually said it'd work better than prescription drops (I miss that doctor) I also used breast milk in hubby's eye when he scratched his cornea once.

My boys never had ear infections, so I can't speak to that, but I would guess that it wouldn't hurt even if it didn't cure him.

I have gotten ear infections (As an adult) and I used cinnamon essential oil in olive oil, as I didn't have garlic oil, but if I had kids prone to ear infections I'd definitely invest in garlic oil, as studies show it is VERY effective. Just make sure the ear drum isn't ruptured-let me tell you from personal experience, putting any drops in a perforated ear drum is like being stabbed int eh ear with a hot poker.

    for cuts and scrapes

I have heard that it is good to put a few drops into a bath for cuts and scrapes as it is a natural anaesthetic.

I bought some doggy ear wash at Target or somewhere like that when we adopted a little 3 week old Chihuahua that we bottle fed.

That stuff worked wonders in no time. At some point, I had a little ear trouble coming on and ............ it work yet again. Slinging your head around to dry your ears out is optional.
