I'm looking at Mystery of History to use with all my kids 4th-highschool. What all did you buy when you bought it? There is a lot of different items. I'm thinking about starting on Volume 2 since I have someone who will sell me their cds for cheap. Do you think it will be okay to start on 2 or do I really need to start on 1?

I bought the main text and the activity book. it had plenty to do. We only used it for the red books, as that was the last level we needed and had already used other curriucs for History prior to this.

When I first bought MOH, they didn't have anything but the book. That's all you need. The other stuff is nice, and if I had to do it again, I would probably buy some of it if I had the money. I would also start with Vol. 1.

It depends on if your children are pretty solid on ancient and Biblical history. Volume 1 goes from Creation through the death and resurrection of Christ. Volume 2 picks up from there and goes through early church history and the middle ages. So if they are not strong in the early history you probably want to start there.

As for the products we use the textbook and I do some of the activities, the timeline and some of the map work that are laid out in the text. Those are not available on the cds. In the text there are also quizes but we do not use those. I did buy the folder book for volume 1 and 2 and I do like that as an introduction to note taking for dd (she is in 5th grade). For our time line I purchased cds from Homeschool in the Woods and I printed out what we need for this year.

I have the Super Supplemental Collection CD to go with ours and while I agree that the book alone is a full curriculum the CD is nice.

My kids are both younger so we stretch our lessons out to two weeks for each lesson and it's nice to have lots of options (Coloring Pages, Challenge Cards, Notebooking Pages, and lapbook set) to go with each lesson to really reinforce it.

I have done vol 1,2, and we are half way done with 3. (come on 4!) My kids are younger Early elementary age, my oldest is 10, so we have just been doing light time line work, a few maps (mostly I just get the kids to point out where in the world we are reading about when we start) and the coloring pages. We would orally do some of the quizzes or questions for each section. I loved the vol 1 &2 where everything was in one book, and I bought the coloring pages for my arty daughter. I found free downloadable time line figures and I printed those on cardstock. I think they were on the MOH yahoo group. With vol 3 we only bought the student book, and coloring pages, we are not even doing a time line anymore either. I am not exactly happy with that, but I don't know at this stage of the game if buying the TM would have helped any. I am planning on starting over from vol 1 after we finish vol 4. This time around I will expect my kids to do more of the lessons and keep a journal etc.
I think what you buy depends a lot on what you are going to expect out of your kids, the younger ones, just the book is fine. The older ones you might need some of the add ons. :)
