A.C.E, CLE or Lifepac for English? I'm looking for English for my 4th, 6th and 8th graders next year. I'm looking for a workbook type curriculum that they can work on on their own. What is your experience with these, good or bad? They are doing SOS right now and I want to move away from computer based but still be independent. Thanks
I am a huge fan of CLE. We began using it in 3rd grade with my oldest and are using 1st grade this year with my middle. It is very self directed. My oldest rarely asks for assistance. He has no problem reading the lesson and completing the written part independently. I do have to guide my 1st grader but she is not a confident reader yet. You can see samples on their website. They have samples for each light unit in each grade. Let me know if you have specific questions. I'll be glad to try to answer.
I vote for CLE, also. We have not used the others, though, so I can't compare them. CLE is very thorough, independent (mostly), and my son always liked the individual lightunits. He felt as though he really accomplished something when he finished one.
I third the motion for CLE! I have used every level from 100 through 800 and we're started on English I for high school. Very thorough, very independent, and produces great results. I have used Lifepacs, back in the day, and wouldn't use it again if you gave it to me free. Too confusing, not laid out all that well, and I found assignments for which there were no instructions except "do this assignment". (Like "write a newsletter".) I haven't used ACE but I've looked closely at it, and CLE is lightyears better.
I've used all three. For English this year we are using ACE along with their Word Building and Creative Writing and Literature. This is the subject where my daughter excels and she LOVES the workbook approach. Lifepacs for English, no I would not recommend at all. My older daughter used it for 9th grade, it was jumpy and inconsistent. We tried it for 1st grade with my younger daughter and she did the entire first booklet in a day. I do like the Lifepac History/Geography.
Thanks everyone. I went ahead and ordered the CLE books. I did one book for each grade to see if they like it and if it works for us. I'm glad they offered the books individually so I can check them out first without spending a lot of money.
I love CLE's spiral approach in both math and English! Helps ADHD kids not get bored doing whole chapters/units of only one kind of problem, but gets in plenty of practice on each concept, spread out over many lessons.
