Been there, done that. It took over a year for our son (23 and a US citizen) to get his permit. The really difficult cycle to break was that he needed picture ID (i.e., a permit) to open a bank account, but he couldn't get a permit without a bank account. The most frustrating thing is that one person in the DVLC would say a certain ID was OK, but the person doing the processing would deny it - after we'd waited several hours in line. As you say, you can't get emotional about it but simply have to bite your tongue and work through the process.

It is crazy. Last year we went to get my son an ID and had to have his birth certificate, social security card and then at least one other document. I scoured the list for acceptable documents and the only thing I found was birth announcement. I am so glad I kept that. He didn't have a school ID or anything else.

The real crazy thing is that just the other day, we went to get his learner's permit and they asked for two documents showing residence and his social security card. I was angry. I couldn't believe that the DPS, which gave us his ID, had to see more proof after they had alread seen this stuff not too long ago. It is ridiculous.

Friends of ours just had to drive seven hours each way in order to get a copy of a document that the state of Georgia insisted was needed to renew the husband's license. He's a citizen, was born a citizen, and has been driving for over 20 years. The situation is becoming ridiculous.

I feel like they want my blood just to prove that she is my daughter, born and raised my me.. and I am her mother! Its crazy! I have filled out a book just to have her take a test for her license. Government and paper work that's all it is! hahaha...

Best thing to do if you're uncertain is to go to the website of whatever agency issues licenses/State IDs in your state, and print off a copy of what their website says is required. In Michigan, it's the Secretary of State's office.

If you show up with a printed copy of what's required...AND the documents they ask for...they really can't turn you down.

For Elle, we needed her official birth certificate, her transcript, and two other pieces of ID with her address...we used the envelope her social security card was mailed in, her library card (it's a photo ID in our community) and they also accepted my driver's license because I was present and listed on her birth certificate.

We've done that. We've shown them the printed copy - and they still refuse to accept some forms of ID. For example, our son's bank account was joint with my wife, so they wouldn't accept it. They wouldn't accept a payslip, for some reason. It's open to their interpretation, and even then the person at the front door may say it's fine, but the person behind the counter rejects it. The best thing is to take EVERY form of ID you can think of and hope for the best.

I'm not sure why this problem has arisen. In Georgia, it's probably due in part to right-wing political pressure against immigrants, but for sure the policy has backfired.

Absolute worst case (and we resisted this because of the relatively high cost), we were told to get our son a passport. It really comes to something when it's easier to get a passport than a driver's permit!

Not sure if this is any help, but this is a Georgia DDS page with a link to ask questions online.

They really should accept a bank account with your son's name on it (even if it also has his mom's). In Michigan, they accept proof of residency in my name if I can prove the relationship (already have the birth certificate, so this one was a no-brainer). They should accept a W-2 from his work (which should have his address on it). If he's taken any AP classes, his results should have been mailed in his name....that might work.

There's a number for the state office, too. If your local branches are NOT accepting legitimate accepted documentation, you should report it to the state office.

I know they should, but try telling that to the local offices! They wouldn't accept it. The problem is solved now - he has his permit - but it was very frustrating. I can sympathize with Shelby.

Given the difficulties, it's a very valid question! We're talking about Georgia USA.

You will never guess this... we walked into the office and they were playing the local Christian station! Waited patiently for our turn, had one little hiccup but was able to get the right paperwork faxed there... my dd took her test passed and issued her permit all in the time of two hours! God is so good! now pray for momma... my daughter is driving! hahaha!
