My daughter struggles with spelling and we've tried so many programs with the same results - she learns the words enough to get through the lesson, and then misspells them when writing.

Spelling U See looked very different because they don't use lists and the approach is totally new to us. But, it doesn't look like a very common program - I can't find it used anywhere and can't find anything on review websites. Curious if anyone here has tried it.

We also are thinking about IEW's spelling program, althohgh it's $100! They listen to a word list and practice writing it day after day until it's mastered, and then they move on.

Anyone have thoughts on these? Thanks!

I use Spelling Workout, and moved slowly when needed. I started back an entire grade level. It was very good, phonics based.

My son is using phonetic zoo by iew and enjoys it. He does it independently and that helps a lot. He listens to the lessons and has to write all words correctly two times in a row, and the words he misses I have him practice several times. Every 5th lesson you come up words that the child struggles with, so I look at his writing and we practice those ones. I like that aspect of it, so if continues to misspell the same words I can catch that and he practices those.

As far as it transferring to his writing, that is still a work in progress. It is a skill in addition to thinking about what he is writing, so often I will say 'I notice 3 words misspelled' and he looks over his work and corrects them if he notices them, if not I help him. If it is a word I don't think he's had before I will just tell him and sometimes I add that word to his spelling list to practice ( every 5th lesson).

My son really likes the program and it gets done, so I like it too! ;). Good luck!

    Spelling Power..............

It is an ALL level spelling program. (One book, all levels) I used it with all my kids so far.

It is a great program! You "test" everyday and once you get a word correct, you move on. (There is lots of review).

I can not say enough about it. I have a highly capable spelling and a child with dysgraphia and it worked for both.

Spelling U See is brand new to the market so I doubt most people will be able to give you a review of it. IMO I did look the program over from the samples off their website and I was not very impressed

I use Spelling Power with my kids and it works for all of them. I don't quite follow the structure that is outlined in the book though. I give my kids a pre-test on Monday and any words they missed they review during the week using any method that works for them. The on Friday I give them their test. It is very rare for them to not get 100% on Friday.

Like Minthia said, Spelling you See is brand new. My dd, 14, is severely dyslexic. I looked at the samples and if it had come out a few years ago, I would have tried it. I think it looks good. However, it just looks to young for my dd.

She started working through the phonetic zoo this year. She likes it because it is totally independent. It takes her several tries to get through a lesson before she moves on, but that is ok. Repetition seems to help her. I think I will stick with the phonetic zoo through out high school.

We also use IEW for comp.

One thing you should do is work on the Dolch sight words separately and try to get those memorized since they follow no spelling rules!

Thank you all! We tried Spelling Power our first year homeschooling (3rd grade) and didn't like it. Maybe we will try it again, as I still have the book. I didn't realize Spelling U See was new. We are also doing IEW Intensive Writing, and we've used their writing program before and I love it, so maybe we'd also love the spelling. At the Spelling U See booth they explained that the program was developed by someone who studied how the brain memorizes words, and that when the brain sees a list, it stores it in temporary memory, thus making it harder for long term memorization. I don't know if all that is true, but it could explain why she can ace a spelling test, but not carry it over to her writing.

Thank you all again - I've got some thinking to do. If we choose Spelling U See, I'll post a review later on! :)
