I know there is at least two others on here that is using MFW ECC.
We are currently in Africa with high hopes of being done by June but no seeing it. I am combining my 1st/5th while my K just started MFW K. I am enjoying ECC but not quite sure yet with K, we just finished Lesson 1. My question is--
Is anyone going to continue next year with MFW? My DD11 would like to conitue with it next year. We came from using Heart of Dakotas Beyond, Bigger and Preparing. I needed a change of pace. I plan on using Rome to the Reformation for my 2nd/6th grader while my youngest uses MFW 1st if MFW K goes well. She is doing much better having her own curriculum and my son does better with his older sisiter. Who knew? I had orginally planned to have oldest on her own and combine the younger two but it was a nightmare! Not too worried about skipping year 2 since we have read Story of the World Volume 1 for fun and will hit it again in the future I am sure of it.

I'm using MFW ECC with my 4th & 6th Graders this year - also...my Ker does some of the stuff (coloring, I print off worksheets that go along - but she's not doing the full, for sure). We are not doing MFW K because I thought it would be too much.

I haven't decided for sure, yet. I'm leaning towards not using it. NOT because I don't adore the content, because I do. I'm just not one that can use another person's schedule and feel confident. I've been rewriting/revamping the schedule to fit us. Then I start thinking, if I'm doing all this work to redo that, why did I pay $100 for the teacher guide/schedule, etc. Right???

I do like the content. Love it even. We're not doing all of it, though, I think it would get too tedious to my kids.

Not sure yet. Praying about it!!!

I use MFW, and I really like it. My girls are in K and 2nd this year, and will be using ECC next year for my oldest. The only thing I use differently is math and spelling. For these I use Math-U-See, and A Reason For Spelling. I was wondering though, is there enough writing practice for ECC, because I didn't feel like there was enough for 2nd grade.

homeschooler06, why do you say this? Is there too much work involved in ECC? Just wondering for myself for next year.

We are currently using MFW K, 1, and ECC. I LOVE the K program and the 1 is a great fit for my dd7. I have a love/hate relationship with ECC. If I had another Ker for next year, I would definitely use it again. I think I may have to find something different for his 1st next year though. I think MFW1 moves a little fast for him, but we'll see how he's doing by the time we finish K. I really haven't decided if we will do year 2 of MFW for the olders. It's not the curriculum, it's me. I don't feel like I'm using it the way it was designed.

If it makes you feel better, my girls are just now on the second week of Germany and we are looking at finishing mid-July unless we can do some serious doubling up. Our life has been super crazy this year and we just haven't put the time into that we should have.

I really like the K program, but I agree with tiffharmon2001 that 1st grade moves too fast. This year for 1st grade I used A Reason for Spelling, as it also has phonics within the book as well, my kids love it. The only thing I used in MFW for this grade was the science activities. I am getting a little nervous about ECC though, as my dd will be in 3rd grade next year. Is ECC quite time consuming?

Another MFW Family here. Currently, my 2nd/6th grader are doing Rome to Reformation and my youngest is doing the K program. He also joins his older siblings in science when appropriate.
I love the K program for my youngest, but because he is very strong in math, we actually added in the MUS Alpha program and are proceeding at his pace. I didn't use the K program with my middle child as he was unschooled for K and most of first grade. My oldest wasn't homeschooled until near the end of second grade.
I don't have any experience with MFW 1st program but do plan to use it with my youngest next year.
My oldest has used the Adventures, ECC, Creations to Greeks, and now R to R programs. With each one, there have been portions that I have loved and others that I've had to tweaked. We've always done a different math (usually MUS) and a different spelling (just switched to AAS this year and loving it!!!). This is the first year I've truly had two siblings in the same program and that's been a bit of an adjustment. My middle one doesn't like having to wait to do certain subjects with his older sister. He'd rather get everything done in the morning and have the afternoon free. His sister is the complete opposite. Still working on scheduling conflicts.
I will admit to drooling over different curriculum at the annual homeschooling conference each year, but always come back to MFW. Just seems to be what works for us. Each family is different though, that's what makes curriculum fairs so much fun! :)

I am using MFW with my twin boys for K. I LOVE it and was planning to use it for first grade. After reading all the comments it hit me that we also do not do MFW as it is written. My boys find many of the games and drawing stuff to be too babyish so we just skip it.
Can someone tell me what ECC is?
And I am a little concerned that several of you said 1st grade moves to fast. I have one that is ready I am sure, but his brother may not be. But we do still have seven months before we would even start first grade.

I think part of the reason that I feel MFW 1 moves really fast is because of my background as a public school teacher. When I taught K and 1, we always taught all the short vowels, followed by cvc words, then consonant blends, then consonant diagraphs. Long vowels were not taught at all until all of those things were mastered, usually second grade. My dd7 is on lesson 79. Today, she was learning about the vowel diagraph au and silent gh (words like caught, daughter, etc). Just seems a little high level for 1st grade IMO. I will say, though, that she's getting it. She does really well with the workbook and the reader. I'm having a little trouble with her confidence when reading other material, but I think that's mostly my fault for not giving her enough practice.
My son, though, is going to need something that moves a bit slower. He's doing great with MFW K and learning all the letter sounds. I think he's going to need lots and lots of practice getting those mastered, though, before he's ready to tackle what MFW 1 covers.

The reason I thought 1st grade moved too fast is because they teach a new sound everyday without giving much of a chance to master it. I won't use 1st next year for my dd, but will continue with MFW in 2nd grade when she joins in with my 4th grader.

Yep, this is an old tread I started back in '11. I am preparing to start MFW ECC again after using HOD Preparing. This time it's with a 4th/5th grader and tag along 9th grader. My 9th grader will be using Abeka's Geography but I have already told her that she will be joining us for all the fun crafty stuff I plan to do with MFW ECC. We are state side now and have access to craft stores and it's going to be much easier to dome some of the things I wanted to do the first time around.
Anyone here starting up MFW ECC or doing it again for the second time?
