Hello, I homeschooled both my children in the state of Nevada. When my son was ready for air force they said no homeschoolers, but then we educated them and now he has a blossoming career in the air force.

Now my daughter is now graduate of homeschool and wants to go to Beauty school in Portland Oregon and they said she must have GED and no questions asked. We are stumped and dont know what to do.
Thank you for any support you could give.

If that is their requirement I would let her get her GED. Of course if it was me I would help her look for another beauty school to attend. There are a lot of them out there that don't require a GED. However I would be cautious because not all beauty schools are created equal. MANY of them don't teach squat. I attended a beauty school where more than 60% of the students were going BACK to school because the first beauty school they went to didn't really teach them anything. I would look into the top 5 schools (Paul Mitchell schools are excellent) and see what they require. Good luck!

Here are a few links that might help:

Hi, hannah'smom! Welcome! I hope you find the support you need here.

When my DS was "done" (in his own mind, anyway), he decided to take his GED so he could get on with culinary school. Didn't hurt him a bit, and he got right in and got on with his life.

Do check the reputation of the one she wants to go to, just to make sure it's as good as she thinks it is. For military, I wouldn't recommend GED but for a vocational school, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Whenever anyone asks, on anything, where my children went to school, I just list the name of our home school. I do not simply SAY home school. If they specifically ask if this school is a home school, then I will be honest. But mostly, I just am not the one to bring it out as an issue.

On that note, though, in the state I live in, home schools ARE legally private schools and it would be illegal for someone to require a GED from here. I always find it best to not pick a fight in the first place by making sure they know my children were home schooled and trying to see if they cause trouble.

I would also talk with HSLDA. Like Maybe said, homeschools are legal options, and a GED is NOT needed! I'm guessing if you need a GED, the school isn't on the level.
