Hi, I'm a new homeschooler and I'm looking for a good Science curriculum for my 2nd grader. Any suggestions? Thanks! Heather
My kids like Christian Liberty Press for science. We also really enjoy Apologia (with the Jr. Notebook for younger kids). You might have to skim over some of the more "nitty gritty" at 2nd grade, but my 3rd grader is enjoying it this year. Last year she wasn't ready.
Your library will have a million books written for second graders on all sorts of science topics. They should also have nature documentaries, films about the weather, volcanoes, space travel, botany, biology, chemistry, medicine....some amazing stuff out there! Second graders love experiments. Plenty of books that have science experiments for kids at the library, too. Stuff you can do with household items. Do a lot of field trips to zoos, natural history museums, kids hands-on learning science museums.....there's so much available! In 2nd grade, the hard focus is reading, beginning writing, and math. To integrate these topics with light science, try a subscription to Ranger Rick or Big Backyard. 2nd graders are working so hard on the 3 R's...science should be light, fun and enjoyable. Don't make it a hardcore subject with worksheets and tests and textbooks...they already have enough on their plates. Make science an outing to the woods, a day at the zoo, an afternoon at the library, a cuddle on the couch with a nature documentary. At that age, you just need a spark of interest and exposure to things that make science approachable and exciting. The mastery will come later. Right now...work on reading, reading, reading
these workbooks are great. my 9 year old is working thru them now. http://www.christianbook.com/page/homeschool/workbooks/spectrum/spectrum-science?event=Homeschool
I also like Christian Liberty for 2nd grade. Just about a two-page spread per day, follows the Days of Creation.
We did Apologia's Astronomy in 2nd grade. Sonlight also has a really nice 2nd grade program for science.
