Hello everyone. I know I don't take enough time to get on here anymore. I am sorry. Life has been busy. I have a question about School of Tomorrow Biology. I have never used ACE before. I have always used Abeka or Apologia in Science. Okay, we all know Vicki has ADHD, Anxiety, Bipolar, and Aspergers. I made several changes to her homeschool. I am tired of tears and a mama that is losing her mind. This is to help her not to damage her. My question is how do you teach School of Tomorrow. I realize it is self paced. That is wonderful but I don't know how to use the activity pac and when do the labs. Is there dvds to help? I am kind of lost. lol. I truly appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance.
ACE is not my favorite publisher, and will never be my first choice. That said, however, if it fits the student and the situation, go with it. The Activity Pac is nothing special. In high school, they don't put the questions in the PACE, they put them in the removable Activity Pac. That makes the PACE reusable, because you're not writing in it, but do all the writing in the Activity Pac. Also, there is no "teaching", no TM, just AK. The student reads the PACE, answers questions in the Activity Pac, and checks with the AK. That's it. I would simply make sure that she understands what she's reading, maybe review it with her, make sure she's getting the vocabulary, etc. People insist that it's more advanced than the 1-8 grades, but the last time I looked at it, it was still read, answer the fill in the blanks, and regurgitate on the test which was pretty much the same fill-in-the-blanks as in the material and the quizzes. I just looked at the website, and there are DVDs and Lab DVDs, so you don't have to worry about doing labs. https://aceweb.schooloftomorrow.com/store/dept.asp?dept_id=27000&elite_category=E&elite_subject=251
Thank you. Ace wouldn't be my first choice, but with Vicki I had to do something different. I don't the dvds will be purchased. That is too expensive for me. I have everything else. I appreciate your help.
The private school my children used for distance learning used it. It was definitely not a quality program. It gave my children the high school credit and was not hard, but that is it. I will never allow it again for my children. The memorized a lot of parts of bugs and animals, without even learning about mitosis or anything else.
I will check out about adding to it. I can always find more to add on the internet. Apologia was just getting way to hard for her. It was upsetting her more than she was learning. I couldn't handle that anymore. It was awful.
I understand, Trish. Like I said, it's not my favorite program, but if it fits the child and the situation, go for it.
My youngest loves ACE. I switched her to it last year and I really don't like it. I had her take an end of the year standardized CAT test because I thought for sure she was not learning enough with ACE. Well, she took the test at the end of 3rd grade and she scored on the 5th and 6th grade level. We only used ACE for English, Word Building and Literature and Creative writing. This year we are only using it for English and Word Building because she didn't really like the Lit&CW. She prefers to read short stories instead of just a few pages of a full book at a time, so we switched to BJU.
