Hello everyone. I just started homeschooling my son in August. He is in the 5th grade. He is an only child, so may be a little spoiled, but he is doing well so far. We do have our good days and bad days, but it is getting better every day. I admit that the adjustment from ps to hs was a big one and had me questioning myself at the beginning. We do use CLE curriculum, but I am not sure if it is a great fit or not. My son is ADHD, so sitting there doing all book work has been a struggle. I have started implementing more activities on the computer and hands on, so things are smoothing out for us. Thanks for the add and I look forward to chatting with all of you.
Hi and welcome, HSing Mom! Don't worry, it'll take awhile for everything to come together. I use CLE with an adhd 4th grader, and it works pretty well. One thing about it, when you have an only, you can spend whatever time it takes for that one. I hope you gave the diagnostics before placing!
Thank you Lindina. Yes, he did take the tests before I ordered the books. He tested for 6th grade reading and language arts, but I find that he is having some difficulty with the language arts part of it. We are working on it and I am making sure that he understands it. It is just taking us a little longer on that subject. We have the time, so I am not concerned about that. I just hate it when he gets so frustrated because he is having a difficult time with it.
Welcome to the Spot! You have the right idea about implementing some hands on stuff to your school. The one piece of advice I always give new homeschoolers is not to be afraid to just toss out a curriculum if it is not working. You might love something but it just might not fit with your child and it is ok to switch mid stream.
Wow, I'd like to know what kind of public school he went to if he scored ready for CLE 6 if he's only in fifth grade. MOST kids score 4th or even 3rd coming out of PS.
Welcome. I homeschooled my ADD niece through high school. It is a journey trying to work with that brilliant but somewhat chaotic mind of the ADDer. I got a lot of gray hair on my journey. I can not count the number of strategies I tried. Nothing really worked except connecting her with subjects in which she was interested. She loved literature, biology and geometry; she absorbed those subjects like lotion on December skin. However, she aged me twenty years getting through Algebra I and II; it was like dragging her up a cliff...it was painful, but we made it. Good luck on your journey!
If he's having that much trouble with it, it might be the wrong level for him anyway. I have never heard of a kid coming out of PS scoring above grade level. Usually they're one or two levels below. I'm going to suggest dropping back to the 500s and go from there anyway.
