I just found a site for the "Coalition for Responsible Home Education." I was looking to read the new law which was just passed in PA which eased our burden and did away with some redundancy in our reporting. They opposed the law which I found curious. So I checked out the website. They're pretty much the anti-HSLDA. LOL.

The reason this "Coalition" frightens me is because it appears to be a reaction against negative personal experience which leads to reactionary measures that are based on emotion more than on statistics and facts. It seems like the founders were homeschooled in an abusive or neglectful, cult-like environment. So basically, this "coalition" is founded on the mistrust of parents and is working on the idea that government/superintendents/social workers, etc. need oversight of home education programs in order to protect all children.

Their opinion on the PA law shows an ignorance of how that law was actually carried out. We might have been required to submit portfolios to the superintendent, but he/she did not have oversight of our program and he/she did not offer us "advice" and even if he/she did, we would not be bound to follow it. It was a meaningless and redundant since the evaluator must view the portfolio as part of the verification process.

I get the founders desire to "do something" to protect others, but they are trying to remove a splinter using a stick of dynamite!

That's my rant. Have you all heard of this group?

Never heard of it. I think groups like this are why state homeschool groups are so important. We need to have groups who understand homeschooling looking out for our rights.

I'm not too worried about them. I have read things from them before they spoke up about HB1013 and just don't feel they will "over power" us.

I have been keeping on eye on this group for 2 to 3 years. They want some heavy handed homeschool oversight. They claim to have been abused and neglected while they were homeschooled. They claim that their parents wanted them to be isolated from the world and that the parents never kepy any homeschooling records. They are bitter that they had such a hard time being admitted to colleges because the parents didn't keep any records.

I just read their bios. Not sure about the abuse claims. It sounds like they just did not like how their parents raised them. As for the educational neglect...the one co-founder is working on her PhD...

I wonder who is funding them?
