    Hi,
I am new to homeschooling. Im currently homeschooling my son who is in the 6th grade. Everything is going ok so far. Our first evaluation through the home-school group went well. My question is this, Is it possible to only do 2 subjects a day, and 2 different subjects every day? Like Monday Reading and Spelling, Tuesday : Math and Geography, and so on... Just seems like my son gets overwhelmed when i try to do all subjects in one day. Thanks for any and all advice.....

I guess it's possible, but I find that when we do reading, math, and LA every day, it works better for us. Science and history, maybe can get by with alternating days. What sort of curriculum are you using?

They do block schedules in school, I do not see why you could not plan one at home. You would have to double/triple up the amount of work you would do in one day for that particular subject but it could be done. I am not a fan of block scheduling with Math though, I find it is easier on most kids to do a lesson a day.

You can do whatever you want. If it works for you, then do it. The only hitch may be the hoops you may have to jump through for state regulations (or maybe you're in a mostly unregulated state!).

I'd give it a try. If he's not the type to burn out on several hours of the same subject in one day, then it might be good. Also, I'd worry a bit about retention. If he did a subject only once per week, then it's an entire week before he's at that subject again. Will he remember what he learned, or will you spend a lot of time on review? I don't know if you were talking about going a whole week - so you'll have to tweak it to see if you should do each subject two days, three days, whatever seems to be the best. Good luck! :)

I have the same comments as others... retention, boredom, state requirements, etc. Otherwise, it seems like the best route might be to hit the core subjects daily (LA and math), but everything else only a couple of days/week.

I know a few families who say their kids like to dig into a topic and stay with it. Some will work on the same topic all morning, and then switch. I know one family who does one textbook at a time. Her two older girls learn together. The do the whole socials book in a month. Then spend a couple of months digging into science. They just work better that way. Mom makes them do a little math every day so that they don't loose it. But it suits their personality to go hard on one topic and then switch when they are done.

My kids couldn't do it. They like the variety of more subjects, but if it works for your so, go for it. :)

We go through times when getting motivated to do any school work is difficult. My general rule is we do Math and Reading every day. Then we can add a different subject on different days. So, for example, Mondays we do Math, Reading and Science. Tuesdays it is Math, Reading and Language Arts...etc. Now this isn't our norm but it helps in those weeks when emotions are running high and frustration is settling in for us. The beauty of home school is you get to do what works best for your child. Try it a new way for a month and then evaluate his progress to determine if it is working. Welcome to Homeschool!
