My husband and I will be attending MACHE (Minnesota Assoc Christian Home Educators) in April. One of the workshops will be Math U See. My son has lots of mental health issues and a kinesthetic program was recommended.

Does anyone have any experience with this program? Thank you.

The only "experience" with MUS I've had was a student who came to me after doing the addition, subtraction, and multiplication levels, whatever they are called. When I gave him placement test, he had mostly forgotten how to add and subtract, and knew nothing about time, money, or measurement. We had to start him over from first grade. The spiral build of Christian Light Education's math was not confusing to him at all, and he did well with it. He had "issues" too, although I have no idea how he would match up with your son in any way.

I have been using Math-U-See for five years and it has worked very well for us. My son is now doing Pre-algebra and has a very good foundational understanding of math. Lindina noted that her student didn't know about measurement, time, or money, but those *are* in Math-U-See. Since it is a mastery based program, those things are introduced at times different than what is traditionally expected. My 8 year old can add, subtract, and multiply any set of numbers I give her and she has only used Math-U-See. I have heard from people with math backgrounds that the elementary levels are excellent for building math understanding, but the high school levels seem too light to be considered college prep.

We used it briefly for my 8th grader, she got frustrated with the program as it relied too much on the how and the why things are done...and all of the manipulatives. She often would get distracted building with the blocks and she was not grasping many of the simpler concepts. We decided to switch to Saxon and some of the techniques used in M.U.S. Overall, we were not happy with it and when we switched had to start at the beginning because with out the manipulatives she was not able to figure out any of the problems she was trying to do with out them.

I do not use it but I know several kids who do use it (mainly boys). As with most math programs it is a good fit for some kids and not other kids. If the child needs a more hands on program then this would probably be a good fit for them.
