i was wondering if there was anyone on here who homeschooled there children. i have one child, and i am going to school to be an elementary teacher, i am starting to realize that im not sure if a public school system is right for me, i want to be more hands on and i see what happens in our schools everyday, im not saying there all bad and i havent for sure made up my mind but i wanted to explore this option a little more, my cousin does it with her children and she makes sure there not socialy behind, or without friends. i think there are pros to both. so i just wanted to know the parents who do homeschool, if you really feel its valuble and if you have any good sites that i can look at, i feel lost and dont know where to start, i have a while but i want to prepare and make a choice. thank you .

Welcome! I have an elementary teaching degree and I taught in public school for 6 years. Loved it! I quit to stay home with my boys and am currently homeschooling both of them. My oldest attended public school until mid third grade and my youngest did half a year kindergarden. We moved across country and homeschooled for the completion of that year. We have continued and next year they will be in 6th and 3rd grades. It is a great choice for us. My oldest was not thrilled to do it at first and now he chooses it. My youngest really just loves not having to leave the house every day. He is the more social of us all but the one who really hated going to school every day. The most difficult part for me is reminding myself that this is not a traditional school and I have to remind myself to take advantage of the freedom. Some days are difficult. There are tears of frustration. But most days are fun and productive. If you are on facebook and search homeschool there are a few blogs that provide some good articles and ideas. If you are looking for curriculum ideas this forum is a great place to start as I see a variety of choices here. I have used and will use Sonlight next year. We really enjoyed it. We did not use it last year as I created my own. I have learned that I liked a bit of structure personally. (sonlight.com) I am not sure how many people are on here over the summer months but as it gets closer to fall you will see more discussion so keep checking in to the forum. :)

    Welcome

I homeschooled my step daughter for high school and we have homeschooled dd since 1st grade (she is now going into 7th). It was the best decision we could have made for our family and the girl's education.

The first thing is to become familiar with the laws in your area. After that see if there is a local homeschool group you can get hooked up with. I know in our area there are lots of opportunities for homeschoolers: co-op, field trips, sports... A local group can also help if you have questions about the regulations. Most states have homeschool conventions in the spring, you might want to look at attending one next year. The vendor areas are great ways to see what curriculums are out there (and there is a lot). If you have any specific questions just ask.

I am also a former teacher and my husband just retired from public education. Even the best school has some serious problems IMHO. I have three children, all homeschooled from Day One. My oldest will be graduating college in December. I think it's much more valuable now than when I first started, because the schools are going down hill fast. The schools are becoming nothing for than indoctrination centers.

Hi, violahalle! I'm not an ed major, but a former school social worker. I homeschooled our son from fifth grade til done, starting in 1993, while working full time. I retired in 2001, and started schooling Other People's Kids 2001-2014. Now we're schooling our grandson (since first grade - tried public school; not working for him) who is a rising fifth grader, and waiting for his younger brother to join us.

I'm also a former public school teacher, and we're starting our 7th year of homeschooling. I like being able to tailor their educations to fit each child's needs.
