I am newish to homeschooling. I have a 6 year old (1st grade) and a 7 year old (2nd grade). They both read very well, even difficult words. They also read in Spanish pretty well. Do I still need to work on Phonics with them? I am planning to follow a Classical education model this next school year and almost all the different publishers include a phonics program. I was not planning to add phonics thinking it unnecessary since my kids are already readers... any advice???
Hi! Sorry no one has responded to your post yet. Are your kids good spellers as well? Phonics really helps with spelling too. You could use a phonics based spelling program.
If they are both reading very well, I probably wouldn't go with a phonics program, but instead consider a well integrated Language Arts curriculum.
I agree with what has been said. There's no need to push rules they already know, but I could see getting a spelling program that is phonics based. I did use a reading workbook at that age that covered both comprehension and a bit of phonics. (My oldest especially sounds a lot like your girls!) It was fairly cheap, and was just a reassurance for me (being new at the time for homeschooling) that I wasn't "missing" anything. If I had to do it over again knowing what I know now, I'd probably not get it unless someone gave it to me free.
