Who all does school work year round? I think we are going to start. How do you set up your schedule? Any tips?

I gave up years ago!!! My goal was to do some math/reading in the morning and then spend the afternoons at the pool. But my parents would take the kids for a week, we'd have VBS a week, and then camp. Add to that any time we decided to take the camper out, and it was just too sporadic to work.

I've had the same experience as Jackie. We tried year round but it just doesn't work for us. I do know some that school year round and use a blanced calendar - 6 weeks of school, 2 weeks off rotation with a month off in the summer. We were going to try it this year but like Jackie said we just seem to have so much going on in June & July it just isn't working for us. Plus...I could us the break. ;)

I'm actually looking forward to trying year-round. This year our younger grandson is joining his older brother here for school. My son is still endeavoring to get circumstances to come together so they can move closer to us, but until that happens, we will be the boys' "boarding school". It's so hot here in Louisiana in the summer that we might as well stay inside with the a/c and do school, and take our time off when the weather's more comfortable to go fishing, camping, whatever he wants to do with his boys.

We go year round (in fact DD is doing grammar over here as we speak...) I find it works so much better for retention for us to keep cranking through the summer months.

We have gotten sidetracked by a week of VBS and a day or two here or there for plans with public school friends, but we just pick up where we left off when we can. I'd rather plug in a day or two and get interrupted than forego an entire summer of material. I've also found the my daughter's behavior and attitude is better with ongoing structure.

We do. I have never tried to set up a schedule. Instead, I plot out what we need to learn for the year. Then we start, and work until we finish. We get interrupted a lot -- holidays, travel days (we school out of town, but sometimes logistics cause us to lose a day here and there), family visits... and sometimes, you just need vacation. Sometimes we do a field trip at home, sometimes we're out of town and there's a site that really should be visited. Sometimes (like right now), there's special programming that I do not think the kids should miss, but trying to do "extras" and do core subjects is just too much.

Anyway, with all the interruptions, sometimes we get done in ten months... some years it has taken eleven.

We school year round and we love it. We get a week vacation every 4 to 6 weeks, plus any days off that we need in between. We usually take 4 to 5 weeks summer vacation. The kids retain better, aren't so bored, fight way less, and we get many breaks throughout the year rather than just summer, xmas, and Easter. Just when we all need a break, it's time for our week vacation.

We do year around too. I don't really plan it out though, as in day by day. I pick books, and goals for us to get done for the year, and we just do it, when it's done it's done and we go on to the next thing.
