    It's too quiet. Let's chat.

When are you starting back to school, or if your year starts in January, how's the year going so far?

What grades are you teaching this year?

Do you have a firm idea how your year will go, or are you still deciding things like schedule or curriculum?

    (to answer my own questions...)

We're starting our 3rd week of school today.

    We're working on 7th and 4th.

Curriculum is in my signature. We'll take a week off in Sept, 6 weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, one week off in Feb and April, and then 6-ish weeks off between Memorial Day and the start of the new year next July.

We haven't started yet. We'll get cranked up Aug 31. This year our second grandson will join us. DGS#1 will be starting fifth grade, and DGS#2 will be kindy/first. So far, we'll still be "the boarding school" while waiting for circumstances to allow son and daughter-in-law to move over here closer so that the boys can just come over for school each day and be home with mama and daddy every night.

DGS#1 will be doing Christian Light Education reading, math, and social studies, and Rod & Staff for English, spelling, science, and when we finish the CLE 4 social studies (geography), we'll take up the Rod & Staff social studies AND various resources for American history. Little brother will be starting out with the ABCDEF series from Rod & Staff, with WalMart workbooks, My Heavenly Helper workbooks, and various kindy things I've collected through the years. Then when he's learned letters and numbers, we'll start R&S first grade reading and CLE first grade math along with the R&S GHIJKL books.

This year we're going to be more read-alouds for both together, including Bible, literature of various kinds, and a couple of shelves' worth of old Landmark Readers of American history. Big brother doesn't know it yet, but he's going to be reading aloud to Little brother quite a bit too. We're going to re-institute doing a Morning Routine, of pledge of allegiance to the American flag, the Christian flag, and the Bible, with each followed by a song, then prayer.

Our Cub Scout pack dissolved, for lack of participation by kids and leaders. So this year we're going to do Webelos and Tigers as Lone Scouts, or at least make the attempt. Since we're doing it at home, we would switch to Trail Life, but TL doesn't have a lone scout type program. We're also going to try to get together with local-ish homeschoolers for park days maybe some field trips and such. It's a loosely organized group, not a co-op, so it's more like "hey, y'all, let's go to the park Friday" rather than a schedule.

Wow... lone scouts! I wish you luck. I know that'll be a lot of work, but I bet it'll be worth it!

We're going to give it a try anyway! DGS#1 isn't that excited about doing Scout work, but he has it in his mind that Webelos get to carry a knife, so maybe I can hold that out as the long-term goal.... and Lone Scouts don't have to sell popcorn, so that's a plus for him.

We've decided to let our older two go to public school this year. It was a hard decision. The schools here are fairly decent, and they know it is only for one year, but that we can change our minds at any time if we don't think things are going well. I will still have my littlest two at home, one of which will be doing pre-K. I've got the About 3 series ready for her, and then we will move on to the ABC series when she is ready.

featherhead - did they ask to go to school, or was it a parent choice?

Lindina - popcorn is HUUUUGE in our pack. (Ugh) My 9ds was in the top 100 for the state of Texas last year. My 6ds is a tiger this year, so the boys have decided to work together for a better prize than split the sales for two smaller ones. LOL

Yes, they asked to go to school. Their cousins all go to school, many of whom are similar ages. So we told them we would think about it for a bit, and we ended up deciding to let them go for a year.

Most likely we will start next week, we'll see how it goes we have been super busy for a month (like not even living in our home!) and I have to get this house in order!

    I have a 3rd grader (9), a K (soft k) (5), and going really loose PreK (4).

We are doing a big mix match, rod and staff, CLE, ambleside, old fashioned education... lol haha it's being pulled from every direction, but with a general idea going.

Cool! I majored in music and minored in science. What's her area of musical emphasis? Mine was symphonic percussion (but also piano, since that was my first instrument).

Her focus is piano performance, then violin.

We just started our 3rd week of 3rd grade. We are already having a rough go of it. I think we just haven't got into a good groove yet. My daughter thrives on a schedule and becasue we have been sick on and off there just hasn't really been a schedule. Plus most of the homeschool classes around here haven't started yet so it's just her and me around the house - and an occasional trip to the library. :)

We are doing a mix of things for 3rd: LOF, BrainPop, Learn at Home and a few other things. This might be part of the problem too. We may need to switch up a bit.

Phillip started Monday, though not in full (as his history book is hopefully on its way!). Yesterday Faythe and I took a COTA bus to the community college, which was a very productive trip. This over-protective momma feels much better now about having her one totally clueless child taking a city bus to school through a rather rough neighborhood!

All my friends are posting pictures on FB of their children's first day back. So Phillip and I decided we needed to, too! At first, I thought it'd be fun to have one of him studying in his PJ's on his bed, but he "tweaked" that idea a bit. So here is my homeschooled son's first day back picture....
