We live in CA, and are 90% sure we would like to homeschool our twin children, who are now four years old. I'm trying to plan ahead to make sure I know what we need to do. I am a special education teacher, so my credential covers birth to 22 years of age. My husband is a college professor. One of the things I noticed is that if a teacher wishes to homeschool, they must have the credential for the grades that their child is in (I'd post a link, but as a new user, I'm sure I can't. This information is from the CA Homeschool Network website). We don't have a multiple subject or single subject credential. My kids are not special education students. Does this mean I can't use this option to homeschool my kids? How difficult is it to use the other routes (setting up a private school, enrolling in a PSP, or independent study)?

Hi there! I'm from Canada, so I have no idea what the requirements are in California. A good place to start would be finding out what the required age is for registering your kids. In many states children do not have to be registered in either home school or public school until the year in which they turn 7. If that is the case, you can take it easy and not worry about the government requirements just yet.

    Welcome, @Rox!

You may have seen this site. It has a lot of good info pertinent to CA.

It looks like school is required once your child is age 6 by Sept 1 of the current school year. I would recommend contacting one of the California homeschool organizations with your question about whether your specific credential would be accepted. It's sad that CA tries to limit homeschooling in that way. :(

I'm not in California, but my kids go to a "hybrid" homeschool. I believe it's classified as a private school which they attend 2 days a week and we do school at home the other 3 days. I really like this kind of arrangement and I think it will become more popular.
