how do u do it? During the school year I work from 10 am to 7:30pm. we will be officially starting our school year in August but beginning July 11th we will begin back with our math facts and writing. We did Abeka last year but didn't get much done. Hubby doesn't have the heart for it and he's the stay at home dad due to his disability. Turned it over to him and he did his best but now I have a majorly burned out 12 year old who is TWO years behind where she should be. I need some encouragement. We thought about putting her in public school last year but they tested her at 4th grade level. She will be 13 and I'm NOT doing that to her! If we had a sylvan learning center I would take her but we don't. Closest one is 1.5 hours away. Hubby can't drive and I can't take off work. Feel like I'm stuck in between a rock and a hard place. We live in Texas and the laws r pretty relaxed here so I'm considering just doing the basics this year and finishing up some of Our left over Abeka science and history this next year. I really want to focus on Math,Spelling, Language arts and reading/writing. I want to bring back the joy of learning to this super smart girl nod make up for lost time. It's been a really hard 2 years. We are all still trying to adjust.

Can you do some online programs? I put my boys in CTC math for similar reasons and that seems to work well because of the teaching videos.

I feel your pain! I work from home 40-50 hrs a week. We have tried several methods, but we ALWAYS come back to Connections Academy online. It's a public online school. They have teachers there to help your students. Technically the kids can do their work on their own with the teachers assistance if needed.
We also used Switched on Schoolhouse program, which teaches them the material and does everything for you. That's a good option if you don't want her mixed up in public school settings at all. ;) (I recommend getting the CDs though.)
I see someone else already told about CTC Math. I second that suggestion. We got the chance to review that on my old blog. It's a wonderful program!!

There are also some online tutoring programs that you may want to consider investing in too if you want a live person to help her out.

I also recommend considering online. I just wrote in another thread about Mobymax. It might sound odd, since we're moving away from it ourselves, but it could be a great solution for your daughter. She can take the placement tests, work at whatever "grade" level she's at, move at her own pace.

Another thought: I agree with your idea to focus on basics...but it also might be great to leverage a hobby or other interest. I don't mean officially make it school necessarily, but I've observed growth in other areas when a person is focusing just on the thing that interests them.

I work out of the home 40+ hours per week and homeschool 2 teen boys. We do school Sunday thru Thursday so that I have 1 full day to be available to them. The rest of the days, I go over assignments before work or after work. The boys figured out that if they start school at 7am or earlier, then they are done by 1pm, and have the rest of the day to do whatever. We also do year round school, so they get a week vacation every 4 to 6 weeks. During their vacation, I use that time to make lesson plans and create their necessary tests for the next 4 to 6 week period, as some of their courses don't come with ready made tests.

My daughter is one who doesn't sit still long. She has to be able to move around and her learning style is more of a hands on type which makes it really are to find something that will keep her focus. We went with Abecka last year because of the videos but she HATED it. I think I may ditch my lunch break and go in at 11 every day so I can devote the morning to teaching her. I LOVE the idea of homeschooling over the weekend when I'm off. I'm wondering how you dealt with the whole "it's the weekend, why do I have to do school?" Type attitude. I have 1 in public school so it's a fight to break the whole public school year calendar routine. I'm going to look at CTC math. I think we tried that a while back. Connections academy is out of the question since she wasn't in public school they won't enroll her. I just want to bring back the love of learning to her. Last year was a total disaster. I failed her and her dad feels like he did too since he's a stay at home dad.

It took the kids a while to ditch the "it's the weekend or it's summe, why are we doing school", attitude, but once they got used to it, and realized that they still have 2 days off each week and get a week vacation every 4 to 6 weeks, they don't mind at all now. They still get all the time off as the public school calendar, but it's just broken up differently.

We just finished up week one of 2016/2017 school year. It was hard to keep going with work and dealing with things at home but we did it. I was up at 6 every morning and she was up at 6:30 to get ready and was at the table ready to work by 7:30. I was able to do some housework in between helping with school. The main issue we have is that she tries to rush through to get done. Because of this she doesn't follow directions completely. She doesn't take the time to really absorb what she's learning. We are working on that. This one has never been in school so I have literally taught her everything from the beginning. She has quite a few gaps but one of her goals this year is to work on them and go to public school in the next year at her actual grade level. It's going to be hard but we will persevere.
