the only subject that we don't do everyday is spanish. We do take breaks though and do only math, language arts, & reading. These are the weeks when we take a day off and dont' want to be in the middle of a history/science topic.
Usually we dont do the science and History every day, but with SOS it blocks a day a week anyway so we just do what is on that days schedule. I am loving the teacher aspect of this SOS stuff! We do not do art, and Pe each day either. We mainly do bible, math, lang arts, and H/g and Sc. as the sos says to, or in Life Paks my dd does every day. I generally would give a day off for completed books too. Since there are ten a year in Life Paks we did it that way as a reward system for getting it done on time. But I know that in goverment schools they do not do the same classes every day so why should we? We tried one subject each day of the week for a while once, anyone tried that?
We do everything everyday except music, art, Bible, and gym. Those are our specials and get done once a week.
we do reading , math, phonics, and writing almost every day. Other than that we do science on Mon. Geography and History on Tues. and Thursday and social studies on Wed.On friday, I give them an overall review on what we cover during the week just to see what they are week on and we do grammer and vocab. I am trying not to do all subjects daily, I have tried it last year and it was very stressful for us.
Stressful is right, Randa. We lose alot of time driving to and from stuff, so we make things up in the evenings and I'm tired of that YESTERDAY!
We rotate subjects in and out. I try to do things like English, science, reading and math each day, but that doesn't always happen. Art and drama are once a week, French twice, and we'll soon be working bible into a daily routine.
Becky, can you get stuff on tapes or CD to make use of that drive time? I don't do that, but I know some do. We're fairly relaxed. We usually do math, reading, and language every day. Science and history goes about three times a week, though with Rachael in Apologia, she usually does some science independently daily to keep up.
We cover lang./reading, math, Bible, each day, and block science, and social studies T/TH and M/W and have Art and Math lab on F. I found after the third week that having science and ss each day was getting neither done. We simply need a larger block of time. We use a more hands on approach for these and setup, transistion time, and the amount of questions etc cause us to need more time less often. My daughter does not like to task change as much as some kids do. This was also some of the reason for the change as well. We start with Bible, then do reading/lang. We push pretty hard on the reading and phonics right now so she is ready to change to math by time that is over. She likes the math alot so that is a nice transistion. SS and Sci bring up alot of conversation so we can drag that out as long as we need because it is our last thing each day. We follow up with computer programs, internet stuff, or an extra lettering or math drill page in the afternoon. 20-30min We read, and do reading or other flash cards at bed time before playing a board game and having a bed time story read to them then prayers. 30-40mins total
sheepish what age are your children again? What grades do you teach>? Re stressful- I think as long as they are learning what they need to learn we all need to stress less and enjoy the learning times more. I am sitting with 9 yr old doing 4th SOS now, and cracking jokes about the computer that was doing the READ along portion was fun!< It was about writting outlines for notes, etc. The thing read the roman numerals for 1,2,3 as I I-I and I-I-I ! we cracked up sayign III! It likes to be distinct in certain words too so by having it read and us follow along it became humourous and enjoyable .. oh gee I did not spell that one right! Anyway, reading this over I am thinking, I used to push to get all the subjects done each day, just because I had extra time that meant we could squeeze in more work. But life does not hold promises for extra time, and it does not let you go back and do fun stuff you should have done either. Yes I am waxing deep philosofical even if I cant spell it today! hahah, I think when a child is more excited about a certain subject they will want to keep doing it and we have to be flexible enough to let them run with it. One day my ds, then 7 was working on H/G and went on and on untill he had finished the whole book. I checked his work and it was all correct! So I know it is possible, for a 7 yr old to sit that still that long, and get it right! What a blessing it was to see him working so hard. That was one of those mostly one subject days. No stress, just be blessed!
Jackie~ Jeanne enjoys her Christian CDs, so I don't bother with educational ones, you know? She likes this one called God's Top Ten. She said if we meet anyone who doesn't know the Ten Commandments we should get their name and send them a copy of the CD. I thought that was pretty cute, that she wants to inform everybody.
Faythe loves listening to the Christian radio station. And she listens to her music while doing math, which drives me crazy, but it somehow helps her to concentrate. So this mom just bites her tongue and goes on!
We work on math, reading, cursive and spelling every day. Language is done every other day. History/SS is rotated with health and science. Everything else is done throughout the week sometimes before or in between subjects.
I don't think we are doing enough work. We are working about 3 hours a day at this point and it just seems too easy! We do math, spelling and reading everyday. Then we do language arts on Mon., Wed., and Friday. Bible Tues and Thursday, and science once a week. We don't do any formal history right now, but are getting ready to start a unit on George Washington which will lead us to the 13 colonies, French/Indian War and the Constitution.
Leslie, sounds good to me. Jackie, my oldest loves to have some kind of soft music on when she is studying too. Seems to help.
Leslie I forget what age your kids are, my dd and I are planning to study the Constitution, I think we have a book on it already even, since she is learning US history and what seems like POlitical type History as well. The Life Paks History for this year I thought was World History but turns out it is a mish mash of modern historical important type stuff. Politics etc, some which is review so that is good.
My kids are ds11 and dd9. I have found all kinds of stuff on the internet for our unit study. How do you like your life pacs? I think they are very similar to the PACE books we use in ACE math. I am curious if I would like the life pacs better...where can I look at them?
we have found a system that works well for us. i keep a chart for each kid per week with all their subjects listed down the side and the days across the top. the things we do every day are at the top of the list. this includes :30 minutes of reading (broken into 10 or 15 minute sittings for some) a journal entry, and a math drill. we use stickers on our charts just to make it more fun, so every one has to get their top three stickers every day. after that we just mark what we get to, that way everyone can see what weve done and i can keep up with what maybe hasnt been doen enough this week (handwriting!) or somthing we have done every day so far so maybe its ok to skip it this week. this has been super helpful for me because its rare that more than one or two kids are working on the same subject at the same time so it helps everyone keep it all in order. as the kids get older i would like to phase them into more independent work and teach them to help keep up with their own progress, this is kind of a first step i hope. connie
