Hi, I'm from texas and I am in my first year of homeschooling my oldest. He is in 6th grade this year. I decided to home school him cause the 5th and 6th grade here is not for him.We are christians and I just feel it's better for him. I feel kinda concerned that he's not learning as much, but he is. If there is anyone who would like to talk with me on homeschooling and give me some pointers are anything they feel is good to know the first year of homeschooling I would be much THANKFULl:lol:

Hi, Zoegirl! Welcome! They say the first year you bring a child "home" is spent "deprograming" them. So if you don't get as much done as you want this year, don't sweat it! At least you'll get your son back! Next year, you can concentrate more on academics!

I'm Jackie. I've just started Year 8. My kids are DD12, DD10, and DS6. Welcome! Just read through the threads and jump in. Feel free to ask any questions you might have. Someone will probably have some kind of an answer for you! You will find that there's no one way of homeschooling, so decide which answers you think will work best for your family, and then try it!

I am new to homeschooling this year also so I don't really have a lot of experience to share. I will say I love homeschooling and I think my girls do too. Welcome to a very helpful and friendly site. Beth

Hi and welcome! I am Leslie and have 2 kids (ds11 and dd9). This is our 2nd year of homeschooling. We love it and are so thankful to be able to be home together!

I, too, have times where I am concerned that the kids are not learing enough...I actually am feeling that way now. But we just keep pressing on and my kids always prove to me how much they are learning and my confidence comes back. It is VERY hard to overcome that public school mentality. But slowly I am coming out of that. Anyway, I get alot of help and encouragement here. These gals have really kept me on the track! And I feel like I am learning just as much as my kids right now!

Hope you like it here and find all the answers that will help you in your new journey! We can all journey together!

    Hello, WELCOME!

I have three children, and we've been homeschooling for 9 years. My oldest ds is a Jr. in Highschool and still wants to be homeschooled! We started when he was in the 2nd grade. My other two (ds-13 and dd-9) have always been homeschooled. The ladies here are great---glad you found this place, and hope you stick around!

Hi Zoegirl! I'm new here, too. I brought DD home in 5th grade. Have to say that was the toughest year as she had to adjust to mom being the teacher. We took it easy that year, and by this year (third year home now) things are going a bit more smoothly.

I mentioned in another post that we started with one subject, then added a second one the following week, then a couple more the third week. Seemed to work well for us; the transition into school from summer has been a lot easier this year than the past two when I tried to jump straight into the deep end!

Hi and welcome to hsing. I'm Vikki and live in CO with my dh of 14years and our 4dc. We've hsed since my oldest was 4 and in pre-k. I think the best advice is to just try and relax and have fun. I think for the first year or 2 it's helpful to have a boxed curriculum - something you can just follow and develop a hs routine. After you get your feet wet and get comfortable it's easier to pull together a bunch of different things. However, I still like my boxed curriculum so I'm still using it. LOL.

Hello, Zoegirl, Welcome! As a Christian, you definitely have an advantage in homeschooling, because the Lord will help you build a curriculum tailor-made for your children. We've homeschooled ever since our oldest was in K, & he's 22 now. We still have two sophomores at home, & these years are the best! One of the most helpful things I was told about mispurchases on books or things that don't work, should just be chalked up to "Teacher-training expense." PS teachers spend thousands of $$ & years in training; so just don't feel guilty if you can't use everything to the maximum that you thought you would. God bless your hs journey!
