    Hey girls.

This is one of thos things that I finally got to start this year. :D

The older two are doing one on Space since we are starting our Astronomy unit. We will be here on astronomy until they get their fill. I see at least 3 months if not more.
Actually that is good for me, dont' have to worry about laying it out. I am using Dinah Zikes Great Science Adventure along wtih Apologia's Young Explorer Series..Exploring creation through Astronomy

My 4yo is doing one on The Gingerbread Man.

Whewee, they are starting to look so good. as far as the layout and cutouts...

Does anyone use Dinah Zikes Big Book of Ideas..you can get from Toins Lab. Not sure though now because of the fire :(

So far we have cut, colored the 9 planets. We will work on each group in our lapbook before we put it together. I think one section will be a fold out rocket book.

One will be an accordion book to put the planets on. We will display some food wrappers from freeze dried food. Our homeschool store actually carried freeze dried icecream.

Maybe one section for the Hubble information, not sure yet about everything.

Another section for flip book for vocabulary..I printed some of that off enchanted learning and abc teach. Plus I got free clip art.

For my 4yo i think a wheel to turn that displays each character that the Gingerbread man ran away from so he can retell story as he is turning wheel....

Another seciton for some letters and word families, .like the -AN family from can.....

One section for several gingerbread man, accordian style so that he can count them and have numbers....

Still brainstorming as I post this...

But we are excited, because we did cover our shutterbook. The boys chose black for space, my 4yo chose red....I think the brown gingerbread man looks good agains that..

    Its just too fun!

    Tina,
A friend taught us to do a bunch of the books out of the Big Book of Little Books. We made an example book during a mother's night out at her house. She calls them Wisdom Books because they are about things you have learned. Her children(she has 7) have made them on all sorts of subjects. They are fun! My son's first one was with his history lesson on the places and things the Oregon Trail travelers would have passed or seen on their journey. Jumping Jack rabbits and a pop-up mountains were a few. He is creative so he did a great job. We do plan on doing others - we need to try soon because they have fun being creative.

I still haven't gotten that figured out yet. I'm sure I'd just need to sit down and read and see what others have done. It sounds fun, but I'm such a visual person, that I have to see it before I understand it well!

So, until I get around to it, best wishes!

We've done two, and I love them! But for some reason just don't seem to have the time. I'm not sure how much my kids like them. As far as Tobin's goes, I think they're taking orders, but they don't expect having anything out for about eight weeks. It will be a while before they're really up and running good.

Sabrina, they want something to pop up  so we are trying to figure that one out.

Deena, you can make them out of anything. We are making ours by using legal size manilla file folders. Take one folder, fold both sides in to meet in the middle. get rid of the original back crease in the file folder, and have two new creases. One on the right and one the left,.. It looks like shutters. That why they are called shutter books too..

Are you With me? Now you have book that closes and when opened you have one huge middle part inside and two small flaps inside.

The way i work it is i decide how many groups or units i want to lay out in the inside. The informatiob comes from your unit.. Like on one flap, we might have an mini accordian book with the plantes made out of index card. Or a ladder made with yarn. Untie it and it all falls down to reveal each planet. tie it up and it neat stacks like a deck of cards

YOu can pop ups, wheels, pyramid shaped.. one website has free templates for all kinds of shapes...

You can make a wheel with paper brad I help my son glue pictures in one wheel on the folderfor gingerbread boy and maybe glue that to the top half of the middle section. Then I make another wheel with a smalle cut out for a *picture window* and attach it over that other wheele, fasten with brad and WHALAAA.. YOu turn the wheel and see each picture in the window. You would use tag board or cardstock, something a little heavier for the wheel.

Each section on file has something to do with your theme. YOu can do flip books, shaped books from abc teach. We will do a rocket that opens for the boys to write abou the moon landing. It will fold out, and fold in to form a rocket shape.

Of course you have to cover the file folder with construction paper. Green maybe for spring theme, black for us doing space. We have a red background for Gingerbread one....

So its like a presentation of your child's work in one neat looking compacted shutter book. YOu usually do something to outside the file folder to show the theme.

Like I will cut the gingerbread boy in half. One half will be onthe right side and theother half on the left side, but when you close the shutters they match up. I will keep the shutter book closed by using ribbon to tie around his neck. So it looks like he has a bow tie on...

They are fun, like Jackie said they take time too, but we have some of that this year, plus since it gets dark quicker, we find ourselves messing with them in the evening some..

I hope I gave you a better picture description.

I love doing lapbooks!!! (well, we are still working on our first one )
We are doing one for Egypt. We're reading SOTW and I decided we would do a lapbook for Egypt, Greece and Rome. We are almost finished with Egypt.
We're also using them for science I'm trying to put one together for weather and I already have one ready for simple machines.
I like your idea for the Gingerbread man one - too cute! I thought of doing one on Christmas traditions or how different countries celebrate Christmas.
I've found that the best thing I can do is PREPARE, PREPARE, PREPARE!!! If I have everything in order (books, ideas, papers...) it goes very smoothly. It's difficult when I'm trying to "create" durring school time )
Keep the ideas going - this is so much fun!

    Tina,
Did you find your ideas for the little books from Dinah Zikes Big Book of Little Books? That one has the pop-out book in it.

There is a yahoo group called Lapbooking. A lot of people post pictures of their lapbooks it's fun to look at - great for getting the visual and ideas! I always tell my husband that I'm not very good at creating my own ideas, but I'm great at copying others!

Me too Shaina! Once in awhile I come up with ideas, but mostly I'm just good at copying! :D

Do you have an address for the Yahoo group?

    Sabrina...

Actually no :D I have Dinah Zikes Adventures of Science.

I actually had joined the lapbooking group so that it would save me the time of having to peruse endless websites.

I figured in their files section or database they would have a lot to steer me in the right direction. I was RIGHT! I limit my time on the computer and make exceptions for major units, like this space one.

They did have website....I don't post on there, no time, don't need to. I just read what they did because I know what I want to do.

I do agree with Shaina, I have learned so far, that you want to gather your *groups or sections* first before you just glueing, kwim? You might decide to change something when you finish.

Right now, our different groups are stored in a ziploc bag..All we have done on our space and gingerbread man is cover with paper.. until we work out what else we want to do..

We are doing this to learn in a fun way so my thinking is why take the time to do something and then not really be beneficial to the kids.

The whole purpose is doing it this way for ME is so that they can constantly review each time they present it to grandma, aunt or cousins...

For the boys, it will be science only that we are focused mainly on.

For my 4yo, it will be an all inclusive unit. Language arts, math, science (animals used in the story) and I'm still perusing the geography question. I'm thinking about rivers or body of waters like oceans, lakes, etc since the fox was going to take him to the other side, but that covers science too......

I haven't seen one done on the gingerbread, but it seems like it lends itself well to what i want to do.. Also, the 3 pigs and the 3 bears would be great too

    Shaina or Tina,

Could you guys post some sites that you were talking about? I need good visuals to be able to go ahead with something!

I would like to try this with our Egypt stuff too. Any ideas on that one? Shaina, how'd you set your Egypt one up?

Do you recommend the Dinah Zikes books?

    Deena....

Here is one that is pretty good I think. It should get you started

    http://www.geocities.com/gibsevengang/lapbooks.html

I'm still trying to *wing it* and not get the Big Books of Books or at least until after I do a few more to see if I NEED it.

Right now, I have so much bookmarked under favorites for lapbooking that I still want to peruse it first.

I have websites on how to fold, what to use and free clip art.

I did get Dinak Zikes on astronomy to do the little books with it. I also have the others on science too. I'm using her astronomy book as a complement to Apologia which is my main spine.

The big books of books has a lot of everything........so I'm still waffling since I want to make a few more......

Okay, let me look for some more to post, but this will get you started

We haven't tried this yet; but I'd be much more likely to attempt it if I could see some of your pictures.
Yes, Jackie- you should ask Amanda if she'd be willing to help us out in that way- that would be awesome!
