As most of you know, we are using Story of the World (SOTW) for history. I found a book by Evan-Moor called History Pockets. They have many different ones. Right now we are studying Greece, and will soon study Rome. They have a book for Greece and one for Rome, so we are using them to supplement the SOTW. They're great, my kids are enjoying the Greece one so far, and it goes right along with what we are studying! Just thought I'd mention another great history resource!
thank you for shaing that with us. I Just bought story of the world last week. we haven't started it yet. But I am also interested in History pockets. As story of the world might be a little advace for first grasders?? where should I purchase history pocket from? are they series? thank you
Thanls for the tip. I like to do extra things to beef it up some, especially for my oldest. If there is an IMAX close by, you should see if the Ancient Greece movie is showing. We saw it a few weeks ago. It's a good one!
I really want to see the History of the World, thing. It sounds so good. I will need to ask around here and see if anyone has the books I can look at.
Deena, We have the Native American one that we are going to pull from next month. Tina has a REALLY cool unit study on American Indian's and when she gets back from her trip and gets some time we will be putting it on the website for all to use.
Randa, The Story of the World Book One (Ancient History) is actually written for 1st grade! The Activity book has activities that go along with that level, though they can be bumped up and enhanced for those with older kids. You don't HAVE to do everything! Just do things that interest your child, and when you feel ready to move on, just do it! All the activities are neat, I think, but we didn't do all of them. Sometimes we looked at those activites, which led us to actually do something else, cuz it sparked an idea. I got that History Pockets book at our local Teacher Education store. They had quite a few of them. They may be in a bookstore like Barnes and Noble or Borders, or at least be able to be ordered by them. They also have different grade levels, so you'd want to find the lower level book for your first grader. I don't think they're a series, they just have different subjects.
Pam, We recently went to an ancient Egypt IMAX film. They're not showing the Ancient Greece one around here right now, but I will certainly keep my eyes open for it!
as for history, I follow the requirement for first grader and go from there. So far, we covered the ancient Egypt, central America and South america. and the history of spain in south and central america. As I mentioned earlier that I did purchase the hostory af the world but haven't started reading it yet why? I don't know. Now, Is it too late to started now. should I go ahead and use it or should I wait for the summer or next year? any advice
Pam, Maybe they'll switch, and you'll get the Ancient Egypt film, and we'll get the Ancient Greece film! Randa, No, it's not too late to start. They're just stories in there, so you can go as fast or slow as you want to! Since you've already done some, just go through and do what interests you! I think you'll like it once you do get going with it! Did you get the Activity book also?
Deena yes I did. I am thinking of having as a story time or read a loud during the day rather than a lesson. we'll see.
That's a good idea Randa. They ARE interesting stories! Then the activities in the activity book just enhance those and make it VERY fun! And they don't necessarily have to know they're learning!
Deena we're reading it already. It's so much fun and interesting. My girls just love it. I am so happy I've the book thank you Deena for the encouragement
That's great! I'm glad you are all enjoying it, we sure do too! Oh, you're welcome, I just think it's so neat that we can help our kids love to learn!
Actually, They DON'T have a History Pockets for Rome. I have something else, that I thought was a History Pockets book. But the Greece one is great--we're having a lot of fun with it! JACKIE, Guess what? One of the things we're doing right now is making a shield that a Hoplite (elite foot soldier) might have used. The kids design and make it. Well, in the directions for making the handle for the shield, it says to use TAGBOARD!!! Do you feel vindicated now?
