Just wanted to try this forum thing out...I'm looking forward to reading more suggestions. I've got 2 daughters (8 & 5)...would like to hear suggestions of how to homeschool when the ages aren't very close.

Hi Betty. Just saw you on the "cookies" thread. I said I was bad about looking at the intro board. So, I decided to give it a look.

I have a dd that is 8 and a ds that is 6. I also have a very active and curious 18 month old girl. My kids arein different grades and have their own work. However, we do unit studies together. We do history, science, and social studies together. I take the lead of the older child when it comes to these subjects and then adjust a bit to the younger one. We have a ton of fun!

Welcome to the board! You will love it. A ton of awesome advice and great ladies.

Welcome, Betty! My three are 12, 10, and 6. Believe it or not, you CAN do some things together! I've done science and history with all three of mine for the past two years. Imagine a 4YO and a 10YO doing subjects together!!! There's curriculum specifically designed for multi-ages. This year, we're still doing history together, but my oldest is beginning a middle school/high school science curriculum and is pretty much on her own with it! The younger two still do science together!

Welcome Betty, I have an eighth grader and a third grader and they do a lot of their work together just at different levels. I would never have made it without the ladies here. I hope you like it here. Beth

    Hi and WELCOME!

We've been homeschooling for 9+ years and LOVE it! I have three: ds15, ds13 and ds9.

We have had at least two working together on some subjects since ds13 started curriculum work. They enjoy working together most of the time. If you find a curriculum you like, you can add or subtract things to make it age/grade/level appropriate so multi-levels can work together! Right now ds15 is on his own more. But ds13 (8th grade) and dd9 (5th grade) do history and Bible classes together. They were doing science and French together last year, but we've moved on to other things. The boys did Bible, Latin, History, Science and unit studies together when they were younger.

I hope this works out well for you. We can get more specific on curriculum ideas that are good for multi-level work if you like...

Hello, Betty! We're at the other end of homeschooling--our youngest are sophomore twins--so diligent that they don't need much supervision. I'm around to help them with math & English (they're in different books, due to different ability levels). I like to lead the chemistry & history; so we do those together regularly. Dd studies French through the internet on Rosetta stone, & ds drills phonics & math on the computer. Our support group is focusing on Kansas history, so we write reports for that & do drama there. We read novels together, & dd paces herself in highschool lit. Ds does vocational ed with his dad. And I come here once in a while for edification, fun, to get new recipes, & to meet new people. 'Hope you enjoy it here, but watch out! It's addicting! Seriously, I have to monitor my time here. Welcome!
