Tonight the first candle will be lit on Hanukka menorahs to celebrate the feast of lights, or "the feast of the dedication," which Jesus celebrated. (John 10:22-23) To learn more, see "Hebrew for Christians Site Updates," about the third paragraph down. This festival lasts for one week. Happy Hanukka!
Thanks for the info. Prarie. My family is actually Jewish. Not in the religious sense, but in the heritage and lineage sense. Whenever I tell people that they look at me funny because we are Christians. But, if people would look up information and educate themselves, it would make more sense.
Jen! Did you know that Zola Levitt, a Jewish believer in the Messiah, summarized the seven feasts of Israel & compared them to the corresponding developmental stages of the unborn child?! For example, the feast of trumpets, celebrated in the seventh month of the Jewish calendar, called field workers & others who could hear it to the temple for a holy convocation. Similarly, by the first day of the seventh month in pregnancy, an unborn child's hearing is developed, and he or she correctly discriminates sound! Zola's parallels fascinate me. (This is from his booklet, The Seven Feasts of Israel.) Did your family pass on any Jewish traditions? I enjoyed imagining God celebrating as he created my children, & I hope this blesses you, too, as your precious little one is being fashioned in harmony with the feasts of Israel.
We have friends who attend something similar to a Messianic congregation, though I don't think any of the people there are from a Jewish background. Their daughter called and invited Rachael over yesterday. She stayed for dinner, which meant she was able to take part in their first night celebration.
Prarie, unfortunately none of the traditions were passed down. I would like to educate myself a little more though and start some of them for our family. Thanks for the info!
