I need help with my daughters curriculum. If anybody remembers, we have both been chemically poisoned and dealing with severe health problems. She suffers from short term memory loss, concentration, and comprehension problems. She is in the 6th grade, but we are now ready to move onto 7th grade in everything but math. Math is her worse subject and needs a lot of help there.
We have used Easy Grammar for the past two years, but I have just realized there is only one more book for us to use and that's it. I believe it's the junior high/high school level. Does anyone know where you are to go after you complete this book? I'm sure we would be finished before her highschool years. Have you really finished grammar when you have reached this level? Are there anymore suggestions for a grammar curriculum that would be good for her and reasonably priced?
What about reading comprehension? Our evaluator has her doing Daybooks, but she just doesn't get it and neither do I, for that matter. She insists that she use Daybooks, but I am wasting my money as she won't work in them. Any suggestions on what I might can try here?
We uses wordly wise for vocabulary, she isn't so great with that either. I told her evaluator this, and she told me to make her continue on even with seventh grade. Is there another vocabulary curriculum where maybe the words aren't so challenging?
In math, we are using Heath this year, and i'm not sure where to go next. Any suggestions on another math curriculum that she might enjoy more? If there isn't plenty of explanations and examples, she has a tuff time at it. I'll appreciate any help you guys can offer me.

    Hey Lisa

FIRST, A big HUG to you :D You need to pat yourself and dd on the back! Please take time to lavish in the progress ya'll have made this year despite your health problems. I know you encourage me to persevere :D

Lisa I do have some suggestions, and I'm sure the other ladies will too  But before I do, remind me which state you are in? I can't remember how much *choice* or final say so you have as to curriculum.

Does it have to be approved?

Next, what is your reading program? That would go a long way to helping decide comprehension and vocabulary.

Finally, what writing program are you using? This help with *direction* on grammar

Sorry to ask questions to a question. But I don't want to stress you out by making suggestions that might not work, so I needed a tiny bit more information

    Blessings
    Tina

    Lisa,
Tina as always is full of wisdom. I'd add one resource for you, the Rainbow Resource Center, Inc. 1-888-841-3456 or www.rainbowresource.com. Their catalog is a wonderful tool. You can compare prices and read about each one. The new catalog is HUGE 900+ pages. They mail it out quickly.
I'm sure you will get lots of great suggestions.

Oh, Tammy I wouldn't wish that catalog on anybody!
It is huge. It took for ever for mine to get here, though.

Can an evaluator really dictate what material you use?

    Becky,
If you call them they will send the catalog out first class mail :D
You are right about it being so huge. I like to use it to compare prices and products. That said, they are to slow in the order department for me. I almost always order locally at B&N here. I'm try to cut back on expenses and trying to convince myself a few weeks is not such a long time to wait.

There is a thread posted here where everyone listed what they are using. It might be helpful in choosing.

    Tina/Everyone: Sorry for...

    Hi Guys,

I am so sorry for the late reply. I have been sick and didn't get online and check my email until today.
Tina, I live in Florida and I do not have to have any approval where my curriculum is concerned. I don't have a reading program. I have always let her read what she wants and I keep a record of everything she reads. She has NO problem reading, but with comprehending what she has read. If she doesn't like the stories in a program, she won't read it. She gives me such a time I just don't feel like dealing with it and everything else I have to deal with.
I also don't have a writing program except my own. We use All Write as our evaluator suggests. She teaches writing and Lacey has been going to a class of hers one day a week for the past four years. She says, Lacey is beyond her age group/grade with her writing. She uses her examples all the time in class.
If you feel a reading/writing program would really help her, please let me know and suggest something that might work for her. I just want to help my daughter and do the right thing for her. I appreciate any help you guys suggest.

    Hi Lisa.......

No problem. This is a busy time for me too. January is bookkeeping time for me, with tax time  YUK....Anyway this is a nice break for me :D

Lisa I have heard good things about Warriners grammar and Jensen for upper grades in writing.

Rod and Staff goes through high school too.

At that point in high school, you are just holding them to applying the grammar rules they have learned. For Lacey, with short term memory loss, it might be good to apply the writing right after studying the grammar. This is where Rod /Staff would do nicely as opposed to having a separate grammar program.

However, if you don't want to do the writing in conjunction with grammar, then I would check out Warriners grammar after Easy grammer.

I love Rod/Staff because its inexpensive, but rigorous and has several lessons of practice to learn new points. It has no fluff and is straightforward.

As far as reading comprehension, that should be tied to the stories/books she is reading.

This can be something as easy as looking at the first few chapter and picking out words and asking her what they mean.If she doesn't know, look them out. When words are learned in this context they have so much more meaning than just doing workbook style.

Workbook style is important too, especially in the older grades, but understanding what we are reading is the main goal.

I use book guides to help me with prep work or sparknotes.

As far as math, I still like Calvert for easy explanations but they only go to 8th grade. I have heard good things about Math U See. This might be good for her for the *visual* that she needs. Also Rod/Staff are suppose to be very thorough, repeating and practicing. The teacher's manuals gives good explanations.

What are you using for reading comprehension now?

    Tina
