(Yes, I am chatty today...) My DH and I were discussing why we sometimes enter our home and the whole world can dissapear. How once inside, we forget allother people, responsabilities and worries. We concluded that we are like bears. We consider our home to be our cave. We do not entertain, our home is decorated for function not looks, we have a dark bedroom and we litterally go into mental hybernation when we come home. (Hybernating from concerns of the outside world). My sister-in-law on the other hand, her home is her "Hotel". She has it nicely decorated for looks and is rarely there except to hange clothes, eat and sleep. She often entertains and is on the phone all the time, when at home. I am sure there are more "Types" of homes.... Just curious if you consider yourself to be more of a "Cave Dweller" or a "Hotel Guest" in your home.....
Although my living areas are somewhat decorated and I try to keep them nice and clean I'm gonna have to go with cave. I HATE to entertain but I loved to go to other's homes to be entertained. I guess I hate the clean up part of entertaining. I love for my few close friends to come over though and they are welcome anytime. With them I don't care what my house looks like and they always help prepare and clean up. I also don't consider that entertaining - just hanging out with my best friends. My house is always clean and I don't like a lot of clutter but we do have toys in just about every room in our home. When dh gets home we go into cave mode. Thats our family time and I don't even want to think about anyone else. Our bedroom is our sanctuary - we have no tv in there and we just painted in a dark relaxing color. The only time we entertain is in the spring when we have a crawfish boil with our friends and neighbors and everything is set up outside - food, games, everything. I don't like a bunch of people in my cave. I'm territorial too!
I have to say cave, although I do like to entertain a couple times a year. We are a stay at home family. I try to keep it clean without clutter, it was easier when there was only 3 of us.
Although I like to entertain, it's just for meals after church and friends over once a month or a scrapbook group once a year (I am in a group with 4 or 5 of us, and we take turns having the scrapbook crop club at our house every other month or so. It's great fun!). We are very family oriented so I think we would be more cave dwellers also! Cute question Jen!
MY home fluxuates between cave to hotel. Mostly it is a cave because though we try to invite people over, the house has to be hotel like clean for me to be comfortable with that. My carpet needs to be replaced with tile and wood, and my walls must be clean! which in the hall and family room means we get semi gloss paint again. Family room is school room, family room, t v room... so it is most used cave of the house. Living room is Hotel, kept clean and neat for the most part.
I think both for me. I love having it decorated nicely and I LOVE to entertain. But it is my cave too, we have blankets under a side table becuase my whole family likes to snuggle up on the couch together. It's just a nice balance for us I think.
I guess I never thought of the hotel part, but I think I am part hotel too. I have 2 extra boys here for another 2 months. My son and dil was here Nov 05 - May 06. My dd is here to spend the night. I have a cave/hotel I just don't have the bedrooms necessary to keep all these people. We only have 2 bedrooms. I turned my office into a bedroom, so that makes 3. I just don't advertise and don't have a maid. I do have a front desk, dining room, swimming pool out back, hmmm. I guess I am the maid, I don't have to advertise, word of mouth gets the place advertised for me I need a vacation.
mine has been more "cave" recently. I do love to entertain- though it's often potluck, or a casual bonfire or friend bringing instruments to play some music together. I like my home to be comfortable and functional for family and inviting to friends. no guest towels, the door's always open, and y'all can just help yourselves!
Cave seems so dark, dingy and barren a word. I prefer to think of it as a Haven....is that okay? Alright, it's a cave! LOL I LOVE to be in my house. I HATE going out. Not because I'm agophobic or anything. I just like my house. We've got a really neat split level that is 5 levels instead of the normal 3 levels (it has a true basement and a loft room we use as a guest suite kinda thing). I much prefer people coming to my house for things like playgroup, entertaining, etc. I've always been this way. We have nice furniture, and it's decorated nice (I think) b/c my hubby is very artistic so it has an "artsy fartsy" kinda feel too it - bordering on contemporary, but traditional enough we don't look like freaks. Actually our house looks like we've done a few episodes of Trading Spaces....LOL So, even though I like to be in my house....I love it when others are here with me too. I wish I could have people come keep me company when I cook and clean, ya know? Makes a mundane task more fun to chat with someone when you're doing it! LOL
Krista, your home sounds awesome! I also like the term Haven better. As I use the term "cave" in a negative way. I always say, "I feel like I am in a cave!" I say that when I look at my living room and think the paint is too dark. I have honey gold on the walls...but since that room doesn't get a lot of light it has a tendency to look dark. I also have dark wood...so there ya go. It is pretty as long as there is light. Anyway...I am a mix between haven and hotel. It pretty much depends on our mood or the day. I enjoy entertaining! I love having holidays or bible studies at my house. I do need more furniture in a bad way though. However, I do love it when it is just my family and we are spending fun times together also. We seem to bring a sense of haven with us though. When we are in family mode...we can feel like the only ones in the world at a park or the mall. lol.
I would love your house too! hehe! I think part cave for me was because I have been in some beautiful caves, but there is always dirt there too hahah! and they are only so big, so much space etc. Yet can be beautiful ( been to see any stalagmytes? not sure of spelling there) I want to live in a dual floored home, my ds9 who wants to be an archetect said he would too so one floor would be for rooms with toys, games, tv etc stuff to do liek ping pon, pool table, air hockey etc... bed rooms too. and down stairs could always look nice. Pretty wise for a 9 yr old eh?> maybe when he designs my house some day he can have it set that way!
I would have to say neither mine is a "library" hahaha Every room in our house including the bathrooms and kitchen has books in it. Every nook has some sort of book in it. Ever seen the movie "Fools rush in"? where the family gathers each Sunday to have a meal, well thats my family. I come from a very large spanish family of 6 girls and my parents each had around 12-14 kids in theres. Once a month we host some sort of party/get together or we are doing something, example just before Christmas we get together to make tamales I mean tons and tons of tamales 150 doz tamales I am talking hahaha Soon our small farm might be opening its doors to vistors for a farming coop so we will have even more people come on down each weekend. Funny though Hubby and I are really quiet people, we hate crowds but we love to entertain on our farm, but not the inside of my house much it sort of pours outside the crowd
We are more like cave dwellers. I admit here that though my how is clean, it's cluttered. I am trying to declutter but not easy.
It seems we have something else in common, TAMALES!!! Christmas just wouldn't be the same without tamales and champurrado. My family gets together every Christmas to make tamales too. It is so fun to spend family time together. Sometimes I make a few dozen by myself to give away to friends. What do you stuff your tamales with? Patty
I would say our home is a catel; a little bit of both. As a cave, my home is cozy and suits our needs but as a hotel, it is inviting, comfortable, and people feel welcome in it. At least this is what I have been told. Patty
That's funny! Maybe that is why so many cars slow down and sometimes stop and stare at my house when they drive by. ...and all this time I thought they where looking at my garden. Patty
Patty pork roast on most of them and some refried bean ones. Sometimes my sister makes these sweet ones too. How about y'all? Sam
