ok, so we have gotten over ds3 writing hump. My question is, he can sound out any 3 letter word, but cannot yet run the sounds together. I know that he will catch on to this eventually, but should I move along with his books or stop until he has this figured out?

well, don't stress out at age 3 he is doing great.

www.starfall.com is a fun place to go for practice.

    Keep reading with him.

Don't worry. Try the Leap Frog videos they are awesome. When my son was little he learned so much from that video. I used to let him watch it for entertainment during school with my oldest. Well, he ended up learning a ton and pretty much taught himself how to read.

Whatever you do...remember the goal is to raise a lifelong learner...one curious and creative..not an Albert Einstien.

What does HE want to do? At age three, I'm one to let the kid take the lead as far as academics go!

My dds are now 5 and 6 yrs.old. I've learned from them that no matter how hard I push them to learn, they will only get it when they're ready. Relax and give him a big hug for going that far. He's a smart kid.

My first thought was Starfall too....that site is just so wonderful.

Also, look into the Leapfrog Word Factory video, I've only seen it once (I want to buy it, we have Letter Factory), but it was neat - talked a lot about how to blend the sounds together to make words.

Also, you could check out "Between the Lions" videos from your library, or check your PBS schedule. they do a lot a bout how to sound out/blend sounds together to make words.

:) Still, Starfall was my first thought.

    Wow, three? Awesome!

I agree with the others, don't push too hard. You don't want to turn him off to the joy of learning by making it a struggle and frustrating. Celebrate what he can do!

same here! Let him have some fun, he's only 3 lol.

At 3 I wasn't pushing the reading. By 4 she was reading easy phonics books on her own. Let him go at his pace and don't push him.

    could also look at http://www.letteroftheweek.com/site_map.html

I was using that for a while

It is true about them getting it on their own schedule. We did telling time twice and Jeannie just got it this year.

WOW!!! I agree...with both my kids it was like a lightbulb. I changed curriculum 3 times with my daughter. I ended up finding starfall and let her play on it. Then one day, I said "I'll do the worksheets with her as she's doing the computer games at each level". And one day she just started reading to me! I thought "Okay, she's memorizing b/c she's playing with them so much". So I let her try some other simple phonics readers I had and she read thru ALL of them (not just where she was in the levels) with no issues. And now, at 7, she's breezing thru American Girl books in a day. EEEK.

I think there is a lightbulb moment. Even for my son, there was one...and now he's into reading everything he can, signs, everything.

    It will click!

Krista, I agree! Lightbulb moments are amazing! Both my younger two had those moments! From struggling with reading to suddenly reading everything! dd10 was struggling when she was 6. She just didn't get it! We'd go over it and she'd say it, but when we got to it again, she wouldn't remember. But then one day she got it! She was so excited! She actually ran and got another book and read right through it! That night she read to daddy. Have any of you read "The Bible Story Books"--kind of large blue books? Well, they're not all that easy to read, but by the next week, she wanted to, and did, read from those for our family worship! And she pronounced things well, and understood it! We had friends over that week for a Friday evening get-together, and they said, "Wow, she's reading so well for her age!" I said, "Last week she couldn't read hardly anything! This week she's reading this!" It was amazing how it suddenly clicked!

Has anyone seen "The Miracle Maker" about Helen Keller? Remember the point when she suddenly understood that the signs meant something, then she ran around and wanted her teacher to sign everything? That's what this reminded me of! It was the coolest thing to witness! What if she would've been at school? I wouldn't have gotten to see that utter joy she had of now knowing how to read! It's priceless!!!
