My parents are constantly nagging me about finishing college. Problem is we don't have the money and hubby makes too much for financial aid.
My dad had mentioned last week that he knew someone that took free classes online. Has anyone heard of such a thing and would something like these even be recognized as a degree?
I planned on returning to college next fall, but that was before homeschooling. I want to take some photography classes and finish up a business degree and I can't imagine doing that FREE online.

I have never heard of that. But, my neighbors both teach at college I will try to look them up this eveing to ask them if this is true and what it's about ok. Wouldn't surprise me they have everything online now days. I know you can take college courses on line but I didn't know they were free.

If you find free college classes online, let me know...I have done many searches on online colleges and never saw any for free.

that's what I found too. I wonder if that's what this gal did? But I can't see the point of taking these classes if they don't apply towards college credit. Okay I can see it to learn because you can never learn too much. But if you're trying to get a degree or finish one it wouldn't even apply.

Why are your parents nagging you about this anyway? Isn't motherhood and homeschooling enough for you to do now? Why do they want you to get a degree? What would you do with it?

My dad often asks why I even got a degree. Marriage and babies came much sooner than in my teenage plans. :)

In TN you have to have a college degree to hs on the high school level. Do any of your states require that? You can get around it here by enrolling in an umbrella school, but you can't hs independently through high school without a degree.

I don't think you'd be able to get anything free and actually get a degree, but there might be scholarships or grants out there. I've always heard there are thousands of unused scholarships each year.

My best friend is a photographer. She took a class through a local photography supply store. She is gifted, but the class helped her learn how to fine-tune her natural talents. She doesn't have a degree in business (she has one in education), but uses common sense to run her business. (She also homeschools & is expecting baby #5.)

Do you want to start a photography business or are you just interested in it as a hobby?

I love photography. I have loved it since I was a kid...I wish I would have taken classes years ago.

I see nothing wrong with having a degree and then making the decision to stay home. In fact, I can't see how the two conflict or how one nullifies the other. Going to college is for you and your development. Also, if something ever happens and you need to work...you are able to earn a decent income.

I agree Ava, but I DON'T agree with someone else nagging someone to get a degree! If it's your choice then I think it's a great idea! I got too busy with kids and homeschooling to be able to handle it! I could probably do something now, but I don't know what I'd want to take!

I agree Deena, it's to hard to school yourself while you are school the children. I know it can be done and some people have done it, but I am not one to do it.

Oh I agree, Deena. One should not be pressured. It is very difficult to go to school while homeschooling your children. I think going to college is a personal decision. I was only commenting that a college degree is not wasted on a woman who stays home.

My cousin pretty much told his mom, that I wasted my life! lol. He said, "she is so smart...always did well in school...she is pretty even...and now look...all she does is stay home with kids!" Now, why my mother told me he said that, I will never know...it wasn't like I cared much for this jerk to begin with. I don't think that my role in being a wife and mother is a waste at all! The hand the rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world! lol...so we need to be careful of who is doing the rocking. lol.

Found no "free classes" either, that would be great, if it were true though. I'm taking online college classes toward a "degree" now, and with 4 kids still at home, and dh, it is difficult; time-consuming.

My reason for the degree is better retirement supplemental income, as we are older parents, mid-40's w/our youngest being age 2.
