My sister wants to homeschool her 14 year old niece and needs some resources. She specifically asked me about books that she could give the girl to read. She guessed her reading level to be about 6-8th maybe? Plus I"m sure she'd like whatever resources you might have/encouragement that sorta thing
    thanks!

    Elissa...

She needs to be a little more specific? :) Is this your sisters' daugher or niece? I assume you mean your niece, her daughter? If not, then I know the parents want to be involved..How does the 14 yo feel about her education, as far as her learning style? Does your sister want her to have input into it? How about secular vs christian or mixed? boxed vs. hand picked? What subjects need the most help?

Does answering a question with questions qualify as a post?

"The Secret Garden", "Anne of Green Gables", "Chronicles of Narnia", "Black Beauty", "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", "A Wrinkle in Time", "The Little Princess", "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm", "Heidi", "My Friend, Flicka" (and the two books that follow it; my favorite is the third where Ken "falls in love" with Cary!)

(Just a few of my favorites....... I've read most of these out loud to my kids.)

You can get book guides, but they're a bit pricey. I've looked into "Whole Language Plus" for my daughter, but I think they run about $10 per book for the guides.

(it's my sister's niece. her husband's sibling is her parent)
As far as the parents are concerned, I'm afraid they just aren't worth their weight in gold. (to put it nicely) and the poor kid is failing school.
Thanks for the input on your books, I"ll have to make sure she sees this...

I would have her read the classics. You can buy sets of them for not a lot of money. Even if some of them are a bit above her estimated reading level, she will get better at reading more difficult books by having books that challenge her. I might also suggest biographies of important women in history, historical fiction, and any other biographies that interest her.

If she wants something light to start out with, she might want to check a lcal thrift store for used copies of reader's digest- you can usually pick them up for under a quarter each, and they have tons of interesting and enlightening reading in them.

She can also pin down the girl's reading level more accurately by using one of the reading level tests at www.homeschooling.gomilpitas.com.

At that age, it's probably a good idea to get the girl involved in picking out what she will be learning. Maybe you could work together on the computer to take a look at different curriculums.

If she helps pick it out, she will be more likely to go along with it.
