We are doing tie-Dye today. We are going on two field trips this week and I like to have semi matching shirts for the kids and this sounded fun. I have a kit called Create like crazy virbant tie dye kit. I've never done this. I had the kids bind their shirts and now they are soaking in the ash water. Wish us luck, I'll keep you all updated on how our project goes.
We have never tie dyed before so please let me know how that goes. I have a 7 and 8 year old that would love it.
well we did the T-shirts (and I did an apron for a friend) At first we were doing just strait colors then by the third one we did zig zags and splatters, then the others wanted that too. They are rolled up still, they take 8 hours to set, then I was them in very hot water. I hope they turn out well.
Okay I have never done tie dye. How do you do it? What do you use? Is there a kit I can buy? Sounds very cool and I just know both my kids would love it.
Amy, that sounds so fun!!!! We tie dyed fabric for VBS last year. The children loved it. Some came out so cool and others came out, well, brownish because the little ones double dipped and then some. None the less, they had a blast. Your children are blessed to have a mommy like you! Patty
I used a kit, as so named above. The dye was powder form and they were in their own plastic bottles, just add warm water! the kit also had tips on how to make different styles, and over a dozen rubber bands, 2 sets of plastic gloves and the ash stuff to make the fabric absorb the dye better, you soak the pre washed (but I didn't dry) shirts, socks, or what ever you want to use in the ash water for 20 minutes, we took two garbage bags out side (split on the sides with scisors and laid out flat held by rocks) you wring out the excess water and lay the shirts on the garbage bags (our work area) then ------- because I'm kind of controlling and I didn't have money to buy extra shirts and didn't want to run out of dye) I asked each kid where they wanted each color and they told me and I used the color they wanted and how big of a space they wanted. Then you take the saturated shirts and put them in a bag---- we used a cut up gargage bag cut in 4ths to wrap the shirts in so they stay moist for 8 hours, then you wash in hot water! I think thats it. IF we had done the kind where you dip the shirts in a pot of water I think it would be a mess, I think that the kids could have done their own shirts with the squeeze bottles, but after I figured that out on the first one..... it was too late, I didn't want to hurt any one's feelings by letting the others do their own, plus like I said I didn't want to run out!--- there was plenty of die for a nother shirt or two but I added water to the dye before they were half gone. IF you only have one or 2 children let them do it on their own...... I took my gloves off and now my hands are stained, I hope it fades soon!
An easy way to dye is to put watered-down acrylic paint into spray bottles and spray the shirt. It's especially easy for the little ones. You can make designs by cutting shapes from contact paper and sticking on before you spray. And put waxed paper inside the shirt!
Thank I am going to get a kit soon. We are almost finished for the year. We should be done by the end of next week - well all except for her science unit on monkeys she is enjoying that a lot we're making it last a while. I have been looking for some cool things for the kids to do when they don't have school work. This will be great!
we tye dye alot and love it.. Tiffany, I bought a kit all the time. It wouldn't turn out brown if you don't mix to many colors.. it's so neat to see what they turn out to be. The best part is have them wrapped the shirt with rubber bands and try to make a pattern with it. It's alot of fun..
The shirts have been rinsed, and re washed and dried. They turned out great, the colors lightened up some and are bright and vibrant---- just like the name. And the apron I did turned out good too, a lot of purple, my Secret sister's favorite color, and I'm going to take some stencils and paint at the top and bottom, I wish I had some fabric to add a pocket. I'll try to E-mail a picture to JeniferErnix so she can post it here for me if she wouldn't mind, I just now figured out how to send pictures in an E-mail.
We used a kit one time too but you can use koolaid too. Just put very little water in it and loads of powder. Mix it very strong and then put on shirt. It will work too. It will get lighter with each wash but all of them do to some degree. Lorna
wow Lorna, I am going to have to try that, sounds alot easier then the dye, what I mean by easier, the clean up part. Thanks for sharing.
Just use several packages of koolaid. You have to make it very strong. Then lay out in the sun to heat dry. Then I also put ours in the dryer for extra heat set. Let me know how it goes. Lorna
You can also use RIT dye, but that can be messy. It is very permananent, so do it outdoors. Here's a link to their web site with instructions and materials needed. http://www.ritdye.com/home.lasso
I used to tye die everything in my misspent youth - but I can't remember exactly how I did it, lol. Will have to get back into it - the kids would love it.....you have inspired me.
Those look great ABall! Tell them they did a really good job! I love the colors. (mom question--did anything get ruined? I'm not brave enough to tie-dye.) Where did you get the kit? I made the mistake-haha- of showing my dd's the pics. and now they want to do it.
