Ladies, my daughter Rachael has a question for your children (daughters in particular!) I'm going to let her take over and ask, and she would love to get some response back from your girls!

Hi! I'm Rachael. I wanted to know what kinds of jumprope rhymes you say. I want to compare different rhymes from all over the United States and other countries. I want to know how they are the same and different from different places, and who taught them to you. So please post your rhymes, where you are from, and who taught them to you.

    Thank you!

    RACHAEL

Well, since my daughters don't generally jump rope with anyone else they only know the one I taught them...

Cinderella, dressed in yella(it rhymes), went upstairs to kiss her fella, made a mistake and kissed a snake, how many doctors did it take, 1,2,3,4,5,.....

This is my favorite- so I guess that's why I remembered it.
We live in Texas. I learned it in Elementary school in about 1976.

I did that one in Los Angeles at about the same time. I learned jumprope songs from the other girls on the school playground

Here's another that we liked back then.

    Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack
All dressed in black, black, black,
    with silver buttons, buttons, buttons,
All down her back, back, back.

She asked her mother, mother, mother,
    for fifteen cents, cents, cents,
to see the elephants, elephants, elephants,
    jump the fence, fence, fence.

They jumped so high, high, high,
they touched the sky, sky, sky,
and they never came down, down, down,
'till the fourth of July, -ly, -ly.

At the end, we'd all say together "Get it? That's a LIE!!!!"

We did Cinderella but...said yellow and said fellow. I grew up in So. CA

There was one...something about bluebells cockershells easy ivy over....can't think of it.

Then the one about the robbers..... it'll come to me but...something about as the ran in I ran out, I asked them what they wanted and this is what they said Chinese Dancers turn around, Chinese Dancers touch the ground, Chinese Dancers tie your shoe, Chinese Dancers that will do. -- anyone anyone Bueller? Bueller?

I'll ponder them the next couple of days and see if I can remember any other ones.

That last rhyme (She) is a double dutch song. As I ran out they ran in ,you see if you can run out or others join you , usually up to 3 people. Also you do the commands that are given, touch the ground, etc. I used to do double dutch competitions from 4th thur 6th grade. I can not think of anymore rhymes then what have already been said so far , but it might come back to me later. Also I'm going to my homeschool group today and I will ask around there to see if any of the ladies remember some.
Its funny you should ask Rachael, my two girls were asking me the same question just last week.

Wow! I grew up in So. Cal, too, and I remember yella and fella. Does the year matter? Then again "the Southland" is so huge, I suppose different versions could flourish in different areas. We were in the East end of L. A. County.

I remember this one as "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear" in place of "Chinese Dancers." Also, the stanzas were: "turn around," "touch the ground," "show your shoe" (instead of tie) and "that will do". The jumper was supposed to do all of those things while jumping and then jump out on the last one.

Chinese Dancers kind of makes more sense, doesn't it? Why would a Teddy Bear be doing all those things? 8)

Could depend on area... My mom grew up in CA as a kid too. We lived in the Bellflower/Downey area - which from what I heard....isn't what it use to be. (it's inland from Long Beach - home of the Queen Mary)
