I am looking for clarity...I am part of a group for stay at home moms. The current president had approached me about running for president for the next year, which starts in June, and I agreed that I would do it if no one else wanted to. Several months went by and and no one else volunteered, so I had kind of talked myself into this being a good idea. I figured it would be a lot of work, but good experience. Well, today we had our meeting and we had to set the ballot for next month. A girl who had never been to a meeting before also put her name up for president. This really shocked me, and threw me for a loop. If it was anyone else who has been a member of the club for at least a month, I would gladly have withdrawn my name, but I am a little nervous about handing over the club to a complete stranger. And the board is asking me to keep my name on the ballot for the same reason. I guess I would just feel like a big dork if I lost an election to a total stranger. I don't know what to do...So if you think of it, please say a little prayer that this will be clear to me. In the scheme of things, it is not a huge problem, but I don't want to throw away a good opportunity because I am chicken and I don't want to take on a lot of extra work if this girl would be good, know what I mean? OK I am rambling now...:?

I'd keep my name on the ballot. I'm sure this other gal would do a good job, but I would be hesitant to vote on someone who is that new. I'm wondering if the others feel the same.

That is what several people have already told me (the meeting was this morning). I guess I will just kind of keep my ears open this month and see...

Make friends with this new girl. If you win, she could be an invaluable helper because she is obviously a go-getter. If she wins, you can help her as her friend who has experience with the group. It might also be helpful to find out what motivated her to jump in with both feet. Is she just one of those take charge people? Is she trying to tackle a grown-up project because she feels like she is losing her identity to mommy-hood? What seems odd to everyone else may actually be a very deep need to belong or to get involved. Who knows? But if you find out, you can help her make the most of her desire to be a part of your group. That way, you are a leader -- whether or not you get the title --though I suspect you will. Best wishes!

Well, we had the election today and I won. The other girl did not show up. I am really confused as to why she ran. She has only come to 2 events (we have something every day) and has been really negative. So I was glad I won because I am not sure how things would have gone under her. Not that I am thinking I will be the best ever, but you know what I mean? Anyway, for some of the things the last president has told me, I will probably be asking for a lot of prayers--50+ women is a lot to keep happy!

Jen, congratulations on the election. With prayer and the support of everyone here and your own group there, you will do fine.
